To what extent do individualist and collectivist anarchists agree on human nature? Written for Edexcel’s Government & Politics 2017 specification but may be relevant for others, especially AQA. I took the A-Level with Edexcel in 2019, achieving an A*, and subsequently studied politics at a top-10 UK university, graduating with a first.

This is a practice essay I produced for the UK Politics section of the 2017 A-Level Government & Politics specification. I achieved an A* overall in 2019 and went on to graduate with a first in politics from a top-10 UK university. The source is taken from the LSE Blog, which contains some excellent resources. This essay was not marked and is not an exemplar, so I would suggest only using it for thoughts and ideas rather than as an example of best practice.

Edexcel A-Level History: Crusades. I took this A-Level in 2019, and the specification is the same circa 2024. These notes cover some core notes, as well as example questions on the Muslim response to the Crusader states, alongside for/against. Total 3000 words across 6 pages. Notes on the below questions and some further questions for revision. To what extent were the Crusader states ineffectively governed 1152-87? How accurate is it to say the religious enthusiasm of Nur and Saladin was the most important reason for increased Muslim unity in the years 1146-92? How accurate is it to say the decline of the Crusader states were primarily due to the quality of Saladin’s leadership 1169-87? How far do you agree 1100-65 the Crusade States became stable and well-governed? I achieved an A*, with full marks in the first three exams (still an A* in the fourth) and took resources from beyond the core textbooks, for instance, there’s a fair amount from Thomas Asbridge’s books in these notes and my other resources. These are practice / revision essays from when I took the Government & Politics A-Level a few years ago. The essays are laid out in bullet points and were done for revision purposes. I achieved an A*. The essays: Evaluate the view that backbenchers are now an effective force in the House of Commons Is the House of Lords more effective at scrutinising the executive than the House of Commons? Is Parliament an effective check on the Westminster executive? New things have happened in politics since then (to put it mildly) but these resources are still relevant and contain useful info on significant acts and milestones in UK parliament. Happy studying!

EPQ question: Benjamin Disraeli ‘had scant respect for probity and integrity in politics - his code of behaviour was truly Machiavellian’. How accurate is this judgement? I achieved full marks in this piece (54/54). I wrote this when I was 17, before starting university, so the language is often a little clunky! For those studying Disraeli at university, use this as inspiration rather than a strictly accurate journal piece.

To what extent do conservatives advocate for paternalism? This is an example practice essay which goes over some of the key aspects of conservatism. I took Edexcel’s Government & Politics A-Level course in 2019, achieving an A*, and afterwards I studied politics at the University of Warwick. I would recommend this style of revision - writing out key questions and then doing answers in abbreviated rather than full prose form. Happy studying! Paternalism is the idea of government by people who are best equipped to lead and make decisions through birth, inheritance and upbringing. It links to Burke’s notion of noblesse oblige, which is that those who are best off have obligations to those without; obligations of generosity, fairness, etc, and in turn, the masses have obligations of obedience and lawfulness.

This essay was written as part of the Culture and Politics of the Middle East module - a module at the University of Warwick. It achieved a medium-high first. It discusses Edward Said’s framework of Orientalism with particular reference to the fact that Said relies on both humanist and postcritical ontologies. It explores this mix-and-match not as a flaw, but as something which can illustrate some quite important things in Orientalism. Please don’t copy this essay, first for plagiarism reasons, and second because it’s important to develop your own thoughts and ideas. Regardless, this essay should help you to better understand Orientalism.

Warwick’s PO301 is a final year 30 CAT course available to those with some specialism in politics or political theory - most notably, those taking PPE, PPL, EPP, EPAIS, PAIS, or History & Politics. This essay was a summative submission and covered the module on freedom and borders. It rejects the argument made by Wellman (2008) that supports the right to exclude. Wellman’s arguments are also covered in other courses, such as the final-year PPE/PPL course Political Economy of Philosophy and Politics. The essay achieved a first. Use it as a source of ideas but don’t copy it - not least for reasons around plagiarism - but also because independent thought is what matters, not so much the content of the argument itself.

Ma Famille AQA Edexcel worksheet, lesson resource, activity. Should take about 15-20 minutes. The level of difficulty increases towards the end, so good for mixed abilities. The activity covers mon/ma/mes, different vocabulary suited to both the AQA and Edexcel GCSE course, and encourages pupils to explore the ‘ma famille’ part of the curriculum using family trees, fill-in-the-blanks and other visual and written methods.
