Functional Skills English Reading Level 2 - 110 slide PowerPoint Lessons & Tasks
This is a 110 page PowerPoint that can be used in the delivery of Functional Skills Reading Level 2. This PPT includes everything learners need to know in order to pass their reading assessment (it is based on the level NCFE awarding body criteria).
The PPT gives learners an overview of the following:
Skimming and Scanning
Layout Features
Purpose of a Text
Fact or Opinion
Bias
Main Point of a Text
Summarising
Tone and Style
Compare and Contrast
Language Techniques
Words and Phrases
Expressions
Following an introduction and a brief explanation of each of the above, examples are then given.
Following this, practice exam questions (that are either taken from the NCFE practice examinations or have been created by myself) are then shown on screen. Learners can answer these questions using small whiteboards or as a group.
Suggestions on how to answer the questions are shown and this is followed by the answer to the question being revealed.

Functional skills English Revision Guide for Level 1 and Level 2 - Writing
A ten page revision guide that helps learners to understand how to pass their test.
P2 Explains the marking criteria and what learners need to include in their writing in order to pass the assessment
There is a guide on how to correctly format the following: letters, emails, articles, reviews and reports. I have also provided picture examples on how each text should be formatted.
Learners are then given tips on how to ‘bulk out’ their writing by using word association. A practice exam question ‘scenario’ is given. It also includes a visual step by step guide on how to use word association to generate ideas.
Functional Skills English SPAG Workbook Tasks - 16 pages, E3 - L1
This is a sixteen page workbook that features a number of different tasks. It focuses on spelling, punctuation and grammar and can be used beside the functional skills writing module. After you have showed them the important SPAG techniques, they can then practice what they have learnt and work their way through this booklet.
This is aimed at Entry 3 / Low level 1 learners. The tasks included are as followed:

Skimming & Scanning English Reading Comprehension Lesson. Functional Skills / KS3/ KS4 PPT & 2 Tasks
Skimming & Scanning Lesson.
Includes a 13 page PPT on the differences between skimming and scanning techniques. Throughout the PPT, learners are given tips on how to effectively skim and scan a piece of text. Examples and questions are featured on the PPT throughout.
Also included:
1 task booklet with a source document. There are nine questions, based on the text, which the students are to answer. Answers are included so that learners can self mark.

English Functional Skills Reading Revison Guide Level 1
This is an English Functional Skills reading revision guide that has been written for learners who will be taking the level 1 reading assessment.
The guide includes an overview of all the information they will need to know in order to pass this assessment ( based on the NCFE level 1 assessment).
The fifteen page revision guide includes:

The purpose of a text

Facts and opinions
Tone and style
Main point of a text
Summary of a text
Each section contains information on each topic and gives examples and tips. This is given to my learners before their assessments and has helped them a lot.
KS3 Uncle Montague's Tales of Terror Reading / Writing Task Booklet: 22 Tasks. Chapters 1-11
This is a 24 page task booklet based on the book: Uncle Montague’s Tales of Terror. I created this booklet for my KS3 English reading class.
The booklet contains 22 different tasks that pupils can complete as they read through the book. There are tasks for each of the ten chapters.

A PPT lesson for low ability year 7/ 8 pupils or an introduction to PEE paragraphs. This can be used for primary school aged pupils. This is an introduction that tells pupils what a PEE paragraph is and provides a step-by-step guide on how to answer a question using the PEE paragraph technique.
13 page PPT with four different tasks based on extracts from the first chapter of Gangsta Granny. Complete with an accompanying worksheet for one of these tasks.

This is a fifteen paged booklet that I designed for adult learners who were completing a Level 1 City and Guilds Employability/ Personal Social Skills Course. This booklet is for the ‘Managing Personal Finance’ module.
All the questions, tasks and scenarios meet the qualification criteria. As a tutor you can either go through the booklet page by page, using it as the base for your lesson plan or give the learners the book as a research project.

Functional Skills English: Letter Writing for L1 & L2 Learners. 29 page PPT and Booklet
This is a twenty-nine page PowerPoint that is designed to be used with learners who are due to complete their English Functional Skills writing examination. It is designed for L1 and L2 learners, however, can be used to teach Entry 3 learners.
This module is: Letter writing. The PowerPoint is a step-by-step guide of how to write and format a formal letter. At the end of the presentation, there are two letter writing tasks for learners to attempt.
For one of the letter writing tasks I have given on-screen ‘tips’ on how to plan the content of the letter and how to ‘bulk out’ a draft in order to raise the learners word count.
The PowerPoints contents include:

What to include in a formal letter
Sample assessment questions
How to plan your letters content and how to ‘bulk out’ your writing.
A booklet is also attached with the PPT letter writing texts included and a 1 page overview of how to correctly format a letter.

A worksheet to introduce KS3 or KS4 students to what to initially look for when they first read a poem.
There are questions on the sheet to prompt them to read the poem and then answer the questions including:
What the poem is about
Why certain words and phrases are used
What the mood and atmosphere of the poem is
Who the narrator of the poem is.
I have purposely left out the title of the poem, as I wanted my group to guess what the object ( the mirror) is.
