GCSE Music INTERVALS and MELODIC SHAPE Whole Topic

(0)
The content in this topic will enable students to do the following: create and identify Major, Minor, and Perfect Intervals, and the tritone, by ear and in written format; understand how these intervals create melodic shapes, which they will learn how to identify. All of this will be invaluable for their listening development, and specifically their ability to perform better in melodic dictation tests. The content is essential to all GCSE Music exam courses, AQA, Edexcel, OCR, and Eduqas, and is useful for both RSL and BTEC courses. It should take about 2 hours to teach. Specifically, the pack includes the following high-quality materials: an original 6-page text-book style handout, with diagrams and annotations, covering the entire content of the topic; a 6-page worksheet containing written activities relating to the creation and identification of all major, minor, and perfect intervals, and the tritone, and a listening activity relating to the aural recognition of these intervals; 10 x 20-second-long MP3 files for the listening activity (also embedded into the PowerPoint); 1 x 34-slide comprehensive and beautifully animated PowerPoint, with detailed teaching guidance notes for every single slide, making delivery of content an absolute breeze; 5-page answer sheet for the activities. Please note that the handout, activity sheet, and answer sheet are all on the same (17-page) PDF document. I take great care to ensure my resources are of the highest quality – both in content and in presentation – and I wholeheartedly recommend them to both you and your students. I welcome feedback and enquiries from my colleague-customers all over the world, and I can be contacted directly at rainynightmusic@hotmail.com. I would be delighted to hear from you, and I thank you for considering this resource for your classroom.
Music Worksheets Staff Notation

Music Worksheets Staff Notation

(0)
This resource comprises 10 worksheets designed to secure, revise, and test knowledge of bass and treble staff notation. Aimed at Key Stage 3 students, each worksheet should take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete, making them perfect for starter activities or for short tests. Similarly, they can be used in combination to form longer tests (including suitability for GCSE Music course tests); they can even be used to create up to two full 1-hour cover lessons for a supply teacher who may have no music specialist knowledge whatsoever. If you use them for the latter, you needn’t worry about coming back to a huge pile of marking either, because full answers are included in the resource pack, so students can mark and correct their own work on the day! Specifically, the worksheets incorporate the following types of activity: identifying note pitches on the bass and treble staff; identifying words written out in bass and treble staff notation; writing given words out in bass and treble staff notation; unscrambling words that have been written out in bass and treble staff notation; converting words written out in bass staff notation to treble staff notation, and vice versa. A handy little guide to notation, which can be printed as small cards ahead of the lesson, has also been included so that students can simply work the notes out, even if they’ve never seen staff notation before – so everything has been thought of for your convenience. As an extra challenge, and for those of you (like me!) who always look to link lessons to developing overall literacy skills, too, why not have the students look up words that they have not yet come across (like ‘efface’ and ‘bade’) in a dictionary, and then a thesaurus to find synonyms and antonyms. I do this with my students and their English teachers are always very grateful! I take great care to ensure my resources are of the highest quality – both in content and in presentation – and I wholeheartedly recommend them to both you and your students. I welcome feedback and enquiries from my colleague-customers the world over, and I can be contacted directly at rainynightmusic@hotmail.com. I would be delighted to hear from you, and I thank you for considering this resource for your classroom.
GCSE Music CHORDS and CADENCES

GCSE Music CHORDS and CADENCES

(0)
This lesson focuses on Chords and Cadences. Specific content is as follows: Major/ Minor/ Diminished/ Augmented chords and how they fit into major and minor keys; Root Position/ First Inversion/ Second Inversion chords; Perfect/ Imperfect/ Plagal/ Interrupted/ Tierce de Picardie Cadences. Students are taken through the information with both an information sheet, and a step-by-step PowerPoint. 12 x written/ notation tasks spread over 3 x activities develop students’ ability to create, identify and interpret all basic chord types and the 5 main types of cadence (mentioned above). 10 x listening questions conclude the lesson, in which students’ ability to distinguish between Perfect and Imperfect cadences is developed. Two Tierce de Picardie cadences are also included in the listening test to challenge more gifted musicians. By the end of the lesson students will have a secure knowledge of chords and cadences. This download includes a 33-slide animated and beautifully-presented PowerPoint, annotated with detailed teaching guidance notes, to make delivery of the lesson smooth and efficient – plus a 4-page student information sheet, 4-page activity sheet and 3-page detailed answers sheet. With regards to the listening questions, MP3s are provided (and they are always my own compositions), and you may well want to insert the audios into the slide rather than use media player. I take great pride in my resources, and the time and effort I put into them is immediately clear. I am confident that you will find this topic to be fully and comprehensively resourced in order to meet both your needs and the needs of your students… and it will save you (literally) hours of planning, too. I welcome any questions and feedback, and I can be contacted at rainynightmusic@hotmail.com. Thank you for considering my resources for your classroom.

Music Worksheets Chords and Keys

(0)
This resource comprises 10 worksheets designed to secure, revise, and test knowledge of Chords and Keys. Aimed at Key Stage 4 Students, each worksheet should take around 20-25 minutes to complete, making them perfect on an individual basis for homework tasks, tests, distance-learning, revision activities, and collectively, as full cover lessons suitable for a supply teacher. If you use it for the latter, you needn’t worry about coming back to a huge pile of marking because full answers and a detailed teacher guide are also included in this resource pack, so students can mark and correct their own work, and teachers (or parents) with limited specialist subject knowledge are well supported. Specifically, the worksheets incorporate the following types of activity: identifying major, minor, augmented, and diminished chords using fixed-interval semitone patterns (for both the bass and treble clef); identifying primary and secondary chords within a stated key (in the bass and treble clef); identifying diatonic and chromatic chords within and outside of a stated key (in bass and treble clef notation); identifying cadences within keys (again, in both the bass and treble clef); creating, labelling, and identifying chords and chord progressions using Roman Numerals, including root, 1st inversion, and 2nd inversion positions (on bass and treble staves); identifying keys, key relationships, and key signatures; identifying, labelling, and creating 7th chords; identifying modulations and pivot chords in short passages of written music. In total, there are 100 multi-part questions spread across 10 high-quality worksheets, which should keep students busy for over three hours. A LEVEL MUSIC MELODY and DISSONANCE

(1)
This resource is suitable for AS and A Level Music and from Grade 4 to Grade 6 ABRSM Theory. This is at least a whole lesson worth of content and activities, and probably 2. It is fully supported by a 29-slide PowerPoint and 2 worksheets, all with complete and detailed answers. This resource pack could be used for both revision and content delivery. By the end of worksheet 1, students will be confident in identifying and labelling all six basic types of non-harmony notes, which create mild melodic dissonance: Echappée; Cambiata; Passing; Neighbour; Appoggiatura; Anticipations. Students will also be taught (and given practice in) distinguishing between chromatic and diatonic dissonance, and between accented and unaccented dissonances created by each of the six types of dissonance stated above. The second worksheet concerns itself with prepared dissonances. Students will be taught how to (and given more practice in) distinguishing between sevenths, suspensions, and retardations. They will also learn how to identify 9-8, 7-6, 4-3 (and even 2-3 Bass) suspensions, along with 7-8 and 2-3 Retardations. The final part of worksheet 2 offers practice in distinguishing between prepared and passing 7ths. This is a complete study of melodic dissonance, and will feed directly into both examination and composition skills. There are more than 30 exercises in total (33) – all with detailed answers, and a comprehensive PowerPoint presentation (which includes Objectives, differentiated Outcomes, etc) making delivery of the content a breeze for you, the teacher. I really hope that you will enjoy my resources and find them useful. I pride myself on the quality of the resources that I publish, and I welcome feedback and enquiries from all of my colleague-customers across the world. AFRICAN MUSIC PROJECT Year 7 and Year 8

AFRICAN MUSIC PROJECT Year 7 and Year 8

(2)
African Music is a very popular topic in Key Stage 3 Music. This project focuses on Rhythm and Metre, balancing theoretical elements such as basic note durations, time signatures, and specific features of rhythm and metre with live group performances. The cultural and historical elements of the music are also a focus within the unit, and explicitly so in 2 of the tasks for the benefit of subject-specific Citizenship requirements. The project is divided into 2 ‘lessons’, which fit perfectly into 2 x 100-minute lessons, but also very well into 3 action-packed hour-long lessons… I have personally taught this project in both of these formats. The theoretical content works best with most Year 8 groups, but can also work well with high-ability Year 7 groups; the performing and composing tasks work great with either year group. The video tutorials take the pressure off you, the teacher, if you need half an hour or so to check homework, etc. Let me teach your students how time signatures work, what triplets are, and how graphic scores work while you mark a few books, if you want! I take great pride in the quality of my resources and I welcome feedback and enquiries from my colleague-customers the world over. I can be contacted directly at rainynightmusic@hotmail.com and I would be delighted to hear from you. Thank you for considering this resource for your classroom.
Musical Eras Activities History of Music

Musical Eras Activities History of Music

(0)
There are up to 3 hours of content in this pack, which covers each of the 6 musical eras of the Western Classical Tradition, a 900-year musical journey! It’s a great introduction to the musical eras and because of the way it is designed and structured, it is also an excellent choice for cover work. Each of the six musical eras from the Medieval to the 20th-Century has its own reading, writing, and listening activity, with a further True or False activity for Medieval and Renaissance, Baroque and Classical, and Romantic and 20th Century, to deepen understanding. While students complete the reading and comprehension activities for each era, there are YouTube links provided to suitable and interesting pieces of music to play in the background, giving students a ‘flavour’ of the era that they are reading about and answering questions about, and a listening sheet to record their observations and opinions for a class discussion at the end of the activity. The links are all checked and are valid as of 28th October 2020. There is also a teacher handout with full instructions as to how to run the lessons, including questions to ask the students, and prompts to remind them of certain things. The great thing about this resource is it is also absolutely perfect for a supply or substitute teacher who has no specialist musical knowledge at all. The teacher handout even has a box at the bottom to give you feedback or concerns from the lesson(s), so you can follow up, just in case you have set it as cover. Everything has been thought of, and it is beautifully presented in an engaging and structured manner. I really hope that you will enjoy my resources and find them useful. I pride myself on the quality of my resources and on the quality of my customer service. Please send any enquiries either before or after purchase to rainynightmusic@hotmail.com and I will be more than happy to help you in any way that I can.
A LEVEL MUSIC COMPOSITION Harmonising a Melody AQA Edexcel OCR Eduqas

A LEVEL MUSIC COMPOSITION Harmonising a Melody AQA Edexcel OCR Eduqas

(0)
This is an Introduction to 4-part harmony. It is a full and comprehensive topic that would fit nicely into 3 x 1-hour lessons, but could be squeezed into 2 x 1-hour lessons with a gifted A-Level Music class if the final task was also set as homework. The content is based around an introduction to Bach Chorales. There are 4 tasks in total. Task 1 is: choosing chords to harmonise a melody. This is based on identifying the key , drawing out triads, and matching given melody notes with the triads/ chords, leading to a 4-part arrangement of the chord progression they have chosen, applying the techniques that are introduced throughout. Task 2 is: Arranging for 4 parts. Students are given a fixed chord progression with which to harmonise the melody from task 1. Meanwhile the PowerPoint will take them through the following: Note Doubling; Consecutive 5ths ; Consecutive 8ves ; Consecutive Unisons ; Chord Spacing ; Six-Way check (SA; ST; SB; AT; AB; TB) to prevent banned consecutives. Task 3 is: Using passing notes to create momentum. Students will be shown a model answer on the PowerPoint to Task 2, which then becomes the starting point for Task 3. The PowerPoint takes students through passing notes (what they are, what they do, and pitfalls of using too many at once) and then students are to add passing notes to the given arrangement. Task 4 is: Working in a minor key. Students use the tonic minor to largely transfer their arrangement from the major, but new concepts are introduced for them to think about: melodic augmented 2nds (and using the melodic minor scale to avoid them); Tierce de Picardie cadence (where, how, and why it’s used); the tricky Mediant in minor keys. From a teaching perspective, you have a full 20-slide Powerpoint making delivery of content easy, MP3 audios of the model answers so students can hear how nice good 4-part writing really sounds, Sibelius 5, 6, 7, and 7.5 templates if you want to use Music ICT to complete the tasks, 4 x PDF worksheets (that you’ll want to hand out one at a time because model answers become the next worksheet!) in case you don’t have/ don’t wish to use Music ICT. I take great care to ensure my resources are of the highest quality – both in content and in presentation – and I wholeheartedly recommend them to both you and your students. I welcome feedback and enquiries from my colleague-customers the world over, and I can be contacted directly at rainynightmusic@hotmail.com. GCSE Music MODULATION and PIVOT CHORDS

GCSE Music MODULATION and PIVOT CHORDS

(0)
This lesson is intended as a first step towards creating proper modulations using pivot chords as part of a Cycle of Fifths progression. The topic builds upon prior knowledge of the Circle of Fifths, Major and Minor Scales, and creating triads. Students are taken through the information with both an information sheet, and a step-by-step PowerPoint that really goes the extra mile. 24 x written/ notation tasks guide students through the following concepts: deriving a House of Keys (for Modulation options) from the Circle of Fifths; how to organise diatonic chords into a Cycle of Fifths progression; how to find common chords between ‘House of Key’ keys; how to use a common chord as a Pivot chord within a Cycle of Fifths progression in the target key. This is a weighty, GCSE level topic, and it will open the door to students achieving higher-level composition grades through an understanding of how to move around the Circle of Fifths. Additionally, there are 10 x listening questions to conclude the lesson, in which students’ ability to distinguish between modulations to Relative Major, Relative Minor, and Dominant keys are tested. By the end of the lesson students will have a secure knowledge of the topic, and you – the teacher – will have more than enough scope to set additional activities as homework should you wish to. All of this comes with a 29-slide animated and beautifully-presented PowerPoint, annotated with detailed teaching guidance notes, to make delivery of the lesson smooth and efficient – plus a 4-page student information sheet, 4-page activity sheet and 4-page detailed answers sheet. With regards to the listening questions, MP3s are provided (and they are always my own compositions), and you may well want to insert the audios into the slide rather than use media player. I really hope that you will enjoy my resources and find them useful. I pride myself on the quality of the resources that I publish, and I welcome feedback and enquiries from all of my colleague-customers across the world. GCSE Music CIRCLE OF FIFTHS
rainynightmusicrainynightmusic

GCSE Music CIRCLE OF FIFTHS

(0)
This lesson focuses primarily on the Circle of Fifths, and this includes both the major and minor keys up to and including 4 sharps and flats. Students are taken through the information with both an information sheet, and a step-by-step PowerPoint. 14 x written/ notation tasks develop students’ knowledge of how keys are organised. This is not just a lesson in ‘what’ the Circle of 5ths is, students are taught how to create the circle from scratch. This reinforces understanding, and it also incorporates revision of major and minor scales, with a focus on how major scales create accidentals which become key signatures for major and relative minor keys. Students also discover relationships between keys on the Circle of 5ths as a foundation to appropriate/ most common modulations: Dominant keys to the right/ Subdominant to the left/ Relative Major or Minor inwards or outwards on the rings. There are 10 x listening questions to conclude the lesson, in which students’ ability to distinguish between major and minor tonalities is tested. By the end of the lesson students will have a secure knowledge of the topic, and you – the teacher – will have more than enough scope to set additional activities as homework should you wish to, and suggestions are included in the teacher notes on the PowerPoint. All of this comes with a 28-slide animated and beautifully-presented PowerPoint, annotated with detailed teaching guidance notes, to make delivery of the lesson smooth and efficient – plus a 4-page student information sheet, 4-page activity sheet and 4-page detailed answers sheet. With regards to the listening questions, MP3s are provided (and they are always my own compositions), and you may well want to insert the audios into the slide rather than use media player. I really hope that you will enjoy my resources and find them useful. Staff Notation Introducing Music to Year 7

Staff Notation Introducing Music to Year 7

(0)
In this download pack, you get a structured 4-page worksheet with 8 separate activities -only one of which is teacher-marked, the rest is student-marked via the Answer Slides included on the 18-slide PowerPoint Presentation, which takes you through the entire structure of the project. If you have 100 minute lessons, you will be just shy of 2 full lessons here - if you have 60-minute lessons, you’ll have 3 full lessons including the assessment and DIT sheet. This unit teaches both Bass and Treble Clef notation (not including rests). The worksheet includes both practical and theory tasks - a right-hand study at keyboard of Ode to Joy, and a left-hand study of the Oompa Loompa Song, for Treble and Bass clef respectively. This allows the theoretical learning to sink in through practical studies. For students who are low ability or who have special needs, there is a full Low- Ability Access pack with alternative worksheet, answers, and a graphic score of Ode to Joy and Oompa Loompa using a system of colourful, cute, and cool graphics of animals courtesy of Pretty Grafik Designs, Montreal, Canada (check them out on Etsy). This access pack is very easy to understand, and all you will need to do is hand it to your TA. No fuss, explanations, or anything. It’s done for you. Still need persuading? Okay - there is a full 30-minutes of video tutorial provided by me - I will actually teach your class the skills in a purpose-made video using Camtasia software, which enables absolute clarity through various tools that you simply can’t repeat in a live setting. While I’m doing this, you can sit at the back of the room, keep an eye on the students and catch up with your marking. I use my video lessons in my own classroom for this reason - and because they fit the worksheets perfectly, there’s no confusion. There is an extension task for the gifted students - a 4-part arrangement of the Oompa Loompa song courtesy of myself in Sibelius Score form (all versions from 4-7.5 including Student and First versions) - and free note rulers (standard and animal ones for the lower-ability) on A3 PDFs that you simply need to print, laminate, and guillotine to keep your keyboards free from board markers, and facilitate instant access to playing music. Finally (yes, there’s more!) you have a 30-mark assessment designed to test the key learning of this project, all complete with an answer sheet and student reflection/ DIT sheet.
Music Worksheets Code Breaker Puzzles

Music Worksheets Code Breaker Puzzles

(0)
This resource pack comprises 10 Code Breaker Puzzles based on general musical knowledge of 10 different areas, and are designed for Key Stage 3 music students. With each puzzle expected to take students between 15 and 30 minutes to complete, they are ideal for individual homework tasks, or can be used in combination to fill at least 2 complete cover lessons. Specifically, the puzzles are based on the following 10 themes: famous composers; instruments; popular musicals; music styles and genres; basic foreign terms (tempos, dynamics, performance directions, etc); notation (signs, symbols, elements, etc); famous classical pieces of music; famous rock and pop bands (mostly from the past); describing music (terms relating to descriptions of melody, tonality, structure, etc); Christmas Songs and Carols (for a handy, fun, and seasonal puzzle). Students use logic and problem-solving skills to complete a code-breaker grid in which each letter has been replaced by a number. Each puzzle has a different theme and contains between 20 and 25 words, names, and/ or terms which must be found from one initial clue-word containing 4 different letters. Each time a new word is discovered, new letters are revealed, and to solve the entire puzzle students must replace every number in the grid with its corresponding letter, correctly spelling out all of the names or terms. Each of the 10 puzzles also contain a variety of shaded yellow and blue boxes, which must be unscrambled after all letters have been discovered, to reveal two final names, words, or terms related to the topic. A full set of answers are provided so that students can self-mark and correct – especially important if you use the activities for cover as you will not want to return to a pile of marking! Additionally, a 2-page Teacher Guidance plan is included to fully explain how the code-breakers work, taking you through an example, and to provide suggestions for extension tasks and for offering extra help to students attempting to solve the puzzles.

Composition for Beginners Composing Project Year 7

(1)
Perfect for Year 7, this project takes students on an exciting journey which begins with the introduction of the Musical Alphabet. From here, they learn how to construct melodies using ordinary words. They are then introduced to simple 3-note chords - again using only the letters of the Musical Alphabet (no sharp or flat symbols, just letters). Students then learn how to match their words with chords, which becomes the basis of a melody with an accompaniment. The next part of the journey is to learn 4 of the basic music symbols and their numeric values in terms of beats (semibreve=4, minim=2, crotchet=1, quaver=1/2). Students group the symbols in a variety of ways so that the combined value is always 4, which creates rhythms. Finally, students are shown how to allocate these rhythms to the words that they have already matched with chords. This creates a rhythmic melody with an accompaniment. The project may end with students (in pairs or small groups) performing their compositions at the piano - a printable ‘note ruler’ is included with the download pack, which fits perfectly over most standard piano keys so that students know which notes to play. They may or may not perform the rhythms correctly, but the composing process, at a basic level, will have been properly learned. I take great pride in the high quality of resources, the outstanding value and excellent customer service that customers benefit from. I believe that my students deserve the very best and I will not sell any resources that I would not use for my own students. I hope that you decide to purchase from my store, and remember: please do get in touch if you have any questions at all. Contact Steve at rainynightmusic@hotmail.com
