It was new for World Book Day 2019 (WBD) but can be used for any celebration of reading. Highly flexible - save the rest for another time. This interactive and strategic team activity is a PowerPoint Slide Show with built-in animations to remove boxes when clicked, revealing images beneath. It’s been designed for Upper Primary / KS2 (Year 5 and 6) and will suit Year 7 too. It’s a fun whole class activity which features a wide range of classics and modern children’s books. It covers books the children had read to them as toddlers, right through to novels they are reading independently now, including those published in the last few months. Popular authors such as Dahl, Rowling, Wilson and Walliams feature several times among the 175 questions to allow success for less well-read children, alongside more challenging questions for voracious readers. REVEAL THE PICTURES:
There are 7 rounds of 25 questions, with hidden pictures (linking to a secret book title) revealed as children correctly answer. You can either choose to continue answering questions in a round after the secret book title has been guessed correctly or leave some unanswered and move to the next round. Whether you have 20 minutes or an hour, this should fit into your day well. You could leave some rounds for later or use them as a fun end of term activity.
Split the class into small groups. For each of the 7 themed rounds (book titles x 2, name the author, heroes, villains, animals and settings) there is a grid with 25 boxes, all containing a character name, incomplete book title etc. Using grid references (A2, B5 etc) groups choose which one to answer, in turn. If correct, they score a point and the teacher clicks to remove it from the grid, possibly revealing pictures that link to a book title. The group then gets a chance to name the book to win bonus points. There are different hidden pictures for each round.
Full instructions and answers are included in the accompanying PDF file. You must have PowerPoint to use the quiz file.
Thank you and I hope you and your class have fun!
