This Designing Clothes Pack encourages children to explore how clothes are made, what materials are used, and how colour and pattern influence design.
The pack includes eight black-and-white outlines of different clothing items for children to choose from and use as a starting point for their own design project.
Two colour worksheets support class discussions and labelling activities, helping children identify materials and accessories linked to clothing design and making —such as cotton, buttons, thread, scissors, and sewing machines.
Descriptive vocabulary cards and images (including words like hem, collar, cuff, long-sleeved, and short-sleeved) help develop language and understanding of garment features.
The final page provides 24 colourful examples of patterns, shapes, and themes ranging from flowers and stripes to dinosaurs, animal prints, and Christmas motifs to inspire creativity and guide children in developing their own unique designs.
Once all children have completed their clothing designs, you can create a vibrant “Our Fashion Studio” classroom display.
Mount each child’s design on coloured backing paper and arrange them in themed groups, such as Summer Styles, Party Clothes, or Patterns and Prints.
Add labels showing the descriptive language they learned (e.g. collar, hem, buttons, striped, floral) to reinforce vocabulary.
You could include a central “Design Wall” with real or printed examples of materials like cotton or thread, and photos of sewing tools for context.
To celebrate creativity, display a class photo or sign saying “KS1 Fashion Designers at Work!”, turning the area into an interactive gallery where children can explain their design choices to visitors or peers.
