The lesson is designed as a code breaking lesson, where children must solve the missing digit problems in order to save a class prized possession. A lesson plan, 8 differentiated worksheets, a letter from the villains for the starter and an answer sheet is included.
The questions are differentiated and cover:
- 2 digit by 2 digit addition
- 2 digit by 2 digit subtraction
- 3 digit by 3 digit addition
- 3 digit by 3 digit subtraction
- 4 digit by 4 digit addition
- 4 digit by 4 digit subtraction
- Decimal addition
- Decimal subtraction
This gives you the flexibility to choose the appropriate level for your class, or differentiate for different groups within your class by assigning each group a different villain's lock to break.

I adapted this for my mixed KS2 class ( Y3-6) and am looking forward to using it as a follow-up activity for our \forensic Science morning. I created a powerpoint for revealing the answers and added applause for the correct codes be calculated.
