OCR Cambridge National in IT (J836) - R050 Design Tools

Updated: 26/09/25 to include different types of mindmaps and advantages and disadvantages of the different design tools.

Design Tools Classroom Pack – OCR Cambridge National IT, Unit 1

This resource pack is designed to support the teaching of Unit 1: Design Tools for the OCR Cambridge National IT course. It provides ready to use lessons and activities that make teaching design concepts straightforward and engaging. The materials can also be used effectively at Key Stage 3 or in any subject area where pupils need to learn and practice design tools.

At the core is a comprehensive PowerPoint presentation, introducing mind maps, flowcharts, wireframes and visualisation diagrams step by step. Each stage of the presentation is linked to classroom activities, so pupils can immediately put theory into practice. To support this further, the pack includes editable templates for each design tool, helping pupils create their own examples confidently and consistently.

The full sequence of tasks is designed to take around two to four lessons to complete, giving you flexibility in how you plan your teaching.

For teachers, the benefits are:

  • Save preparation time with complete, ready-to-use lessons.

  • Ensure specification coverage with resources tailored to OCR Cambridge National IT Unit 1.

  • Adapt easily – use the full sequence or select individual tasks as needed.

  • Support inclusion – activities use visuals and examples to make design tools accessible for a wide range of learners.

For pupils, the activities provide hands-on experience, helping them build confidence and develop transferable IT skills that are also an essential part of their two assignments.

This classroom pack gives you everything you need to make teaching design tools both effective and engaging, while being flexible enough to use across Key Stage 4 and 3 or other areas of learning.
