Support children who experience anxiety around speaking with this practical and flexible Selective Mutism Communication Ladder and Card Pack.
Designed for children with selective mutism, sometimes referred to as situational mutism, this resource helps adults recognise and celebrate all forms of communication, not just spoken language. Using a set of child-friendly communication cards, children can work alongside a trusted adult to create a personalised ten-step communication ladder that reflects their individual strengths, comfort levels and next achievable steps.
The resource encourages a gradual, low-pressure approach and supports children to communicate in ways that feel safe and manageable for them. Communication methods included range from gestures, pointing and writing through to whispering and spoken communication when the child feels ready.
Included in the pack:
- Communication Steps Ladder (10-step personalised template) Colour and black and white
- Full set of 77 Communication Cards (verbal and non-verbal options)
- Adult guidance for use in ELSA and school settings
- Instructions for building a child-led communication ladder
