Y3/4 Polar Environments - Locate the Coldest Places and Compare to Others

Y3/4 Polar Environments - Locate the Coldest Places and Compare to Others

This is a Y3/4 topic (geography) lesson on polar environments. The lesson teaches pupils how we measure temperature, how the celcius scale works and what temperatures you would typically expect to record in given scenarios. If your school has access to a class set of thermometers, you could add an extra section where pupils measure temperatures around the classroom/school premises. The main activity involves researching the winter and summer average highs/lows in different parts of the world, including one location each in the Arctic and Antarctic. It is intended that pupils work in mixed ability pairs and they will need an ipad and an atlas in each pair.

Rivers and the Water Cycle 'WOW'/'Launch'/Topic Introduction day Y3/4 - ENTIRE DAY'S RESOURCING!

Rivers and the Water Cycle 'WOW'/'Launch'/Topic Introduction day Y3/4 - ENTIRE DAY'S RESOURCING!

This is a topic introduction day (‘wow’ day/‘launch’ day) for a Y3 or 4 class about to start a topic on rivers and the water cycle. The morning involves lots of new learning - including an introduction to the key content of the topic. There are two practical experiments (obviously you will need to source the items for these beforehand) - one a simple evaporation/condensation demonstration and the other is the well-known ‘shaving foam cloud’ experiment! The afternoon is more art/music based, featuring a look at the inspiration French impressionists took from rivers/water and the inspiration many classical composers took from this topic. Finally, if you have a copy of Wind in the Willows to hand, this is an ideal topic-themed way to round the day off. Alternatively, look up the 1983 animated version on YouTube!

COASTAL EROSION - WHY THE BARMSTON BUNGALOWS ON THE CLIFF TOP WERE CONDEMNED

COASTAL EROSION - WHY THE BARMSTON BUNGALOWS ON THE CLIFF TOP WERE CONDEMNED

This unit has a focus on coastal erosion at Barmston. (East Coast England). It is about wave energy, cliff recession, storms in the North Sea and Storm surges bringing sea levels higher than normal to undercut the cliffs along the coastline at Barmston. This unit indicates the links between erosional forces and the consequences of cliff recession on the owners of the bungalows (we would call them houses in Australia). This material has been used in a series of coastal studies within the Australian curriculum at lower secondary and at senior secondary levels. It promotes interest and when placed on the screen the material becomes a source of questioning and discussion. The attached pages of rhyming verse were student creations and contributions (with some editing). This unit can standalone or it can fit into studies of coastal geomorphology. Hopefully this will be a useful support for coastal studies. Come and see where the bungalows once stood and with your students you will be able to work out why they are no longer there. It’s a true story with powerful undercurrents.

Beast from the East. Snow day work on Weather & Disruption

Beast from the East. Snow day work on Weather & Disruption

The video can be used by students from KS2 to KS5. It is Geography focused but can be used for critical thinking (for the second task option). The video asks the questions of how have we ended up with so much snow and also about who is affected. For the latter question students are asked to give an analysis as to the impacts. This can be an open-ended task for home/snow work or as a class task with more guidance from the teacher. Tasks: Choose ONE or BOTH questions to investigate and present your findings. How has this weather occurred? Use diagrams and chains of reasoning. (Note the plurals!) What are the consequences of the weather for the people of Britain. Again use chains of reasoning in your analysis. The cold weather seems to have affected the microphone. Apologies for the sound quality in places. #BeastFromTheEast
