German – Food & Drink - A Complete Pack.

German – Food & Drink - A Complete Pack.

This is a set of resources to introduce and practise food & drink items. The PowerPoint initially introduces food and drink items in categories, with practice exercises to follow each set. In total there are over 70 food and drink items and the resource is easily adaptable if you want to introduce less. The work in this pack of resources will certainly cover several lessons. There is a wide range of activities on the PowerPoint and an accompanying worksheet, with 15 different exercises. Also included in the pack is a word search, and an odd one out activity. The PowerPoint introduces questions about food likes and dislikes; a café conversation and then an activity for pupils to make their own conversations in pairs; reading comprehension exercises; and a ‘design your own menu’ activity in a step-by-step format. The PowerPoint goes on to introduce quantities with examples and practice activities as well as a shop/ market dialogue that pupils can then replicate in pairs. Pupils will gain an excellent knowledge of a wide range of food and drink items, and will be able to recognise and use them in a range of situations.

I have been a German and English teacher for more than 12 years now. And I love coffee breaks ☕️. Coffee is just great. Over the years I have realized how much my students benefit most from lessons where THEY are the leaders, where THEY are encouraged to be proactive and learn from each other. Handing over the reins to my students doesn’t make me weaker as a teacher. It makes them responsible for their own learning and is highly motivating. I don’t want my students to be sailors. I want them to be CAPTAINS! (And I want coffee!) My teaching resources are all designed to enable students to USE the language. This is why you will always find the communicative approach in my resources - even simple crosswords come with ideas for speaking activities. All of my resources have been tested in class and will be updated regularly. Please rate my resources to help me build a reputation among millions of resources. KS3/text level German Reading arrow-whole lesson introduction to reading strategies

KS3/text level German Reading arrow-whole lesson introduction to reading strategies

This tried and tested approach to reading provides a visual strategy which can be applied to a wide variety of texts in a second language or in English, improving not only language skills, but also general literacy. Particularly useful when exploiting authentic materials, it can equally be applied to more traditional texts and, once embedded, enables students of all ages to work successfully with more complex source materials than would otherwise have been the case. This resource models the strategy with a simple German text, however it can be applied to texts of a wide range of difficulty. It includes a ten slide teaching presentation to introduce the strategy, comprehensive teaching notes accompanied by thumbnails of all the materials, plus student sheets and the strategy arrow, which can be laminated for repeated use. The resource is also available modelled with a French text and with a Spanish text.

Sport treiben - subordinating conjunctions 'wenn' and 'als'. OUTSTANDING LESSON!

Sport treiben - subordinating conjunctions 'wenn' and 'als'. OUTSTANDING LESSON!

A lesson for a higher ability GCSE class focusing on subordinating conjunctions using 'wenn' and 'als.' I was recently observed by Ofsted with this and was told I would have received an outstanding grade, as all students made rapid progress and the lesson was heavily differentiated. 1) I have attached a higher level text about sport - students play the ignorance game in differentiated groups and pick out words they they think others won't know. If others can't use the context to work out the meaning of these words, the initial team scores points. Students learn these words for their homework. (Personalised homework). In the next lesson, the words will appear in sentences for students to translate. 2) I have attached my powerpoint, which contains 3 key questions re: wenn and als for learners in the lesson, to enable all learners to progress. 3) A 'rip and run' activity - students work in differentiated groups ripping a sentence off and translating it. If it's correct, they are challenged by getting another translation sentence. If not, teacher uses targeted questioning to enable to the group to make progress. 4) I have attached a game of sentence auctions, used to individually challenge students' misconceptions. (Moving from group level to individual level). Students look at word order with 'wenn' and 'als' and bid on correct sentences and lose money if they bid on incorrect sentences. I use fake Euros! More challenging sentences are worth more money! Students can also translate into English etc.

Creative Writing Ideas for MFL

Creative Writing Ideas for MFL

In supporting our students with the new GCSE we need to get them writing spontaneously and freely. Here is a small collection of ideas to encourage students to write creatively at KS3 creating good habits in preparation for their GCSE written work. This could be used as prompt for departmental discussion or a stimulus for work on writing skills. Some of the ideas can be lifted directly from the information here but most will need to be developed to suit individual schools / departments.

German - Transcription pairwork template

Use this template to practise transcription work in pairs. There is a sheet for person A and one for person B. Type the 2 different texts into the relevant boxes (they must be 2 different texts). Pupils then take it in turns to read their text to their partner, who must then write what they hear in the empty box. After they have both finished, they then compare their written text to the original on their partner's sheet and tally any errors made.

This activity can be done in pairs or as a class. As a class, one pupil leaves the room while everyone else decides what the correct sequence should be. The pupil re-enters the room and tries to guess the sequence. If incorrect, they have to start again. It's better as a pairwork activity. One pupil decides which options they want to use in the complete paragraph. The other reads through the paragraph, guessing the options as they go. If incorrect, they must start again. Cue lots of laughter!
