Wordsearch Puzzle sheet of keywords on the theme of ‘Japanese Culture’. Powerpoint so can be used on the board or printed as a worksheet. Ideal for the start of a lesson, a quick filler, a homework, part of a cover lesson or as a plenary on the board with a whiteboard pen. The idea behind these is to get students to become more literate and think independently about the words that could be used to describe the topic being taught. The repetition of the word over and over as they look for the word is useful in remembering the terms. Often the students will pick up on things that you would not normally expect!

Places Unit of work 7 lessons including test

This unit of work has been written for the start of Year 7, but could be used within any of KS3 or even adapted to Year 6. It starts off with what a place is and describing where we live in the world. It then uses local fieldwork to investigate places and moves on to improving knowledge of the UK, Europe and the World. You will need to adapt the fieldwork lessons slightly due to the local surroundings to your school, but this will only involve a localised google map and a couple of images. There is a test at the end of the unit.

OUP Geog.2 Summer Homework

OUP Geog.2 Summer Homework

This is a booklet is based on the Michelin i-Spy books. Students get points for spotting things in and around their homes and beyond. It covers all the chapters from the geog.2 textbook from OUP, and is designed to be a homework project for students to complete during the summer holidays. For each item they find they get points and these points lead to house points, merits, credits, stars (whichever reward system your school uses): I even give students a certificate for completing it. There are 20 pages which can be printed as an A5 booklet or you can choose which pages you want to use as each chapter from the textbook has a set of activities: my version has 16 pages based on the chapters I covered and some extra puzzle pages as well. There is a word puzzle and a place for the students to keep a record of their points as they collect them, there is a place for parents to sign confirmation that students actually did achieve what they say just in case you get a student that makes it up. There are spaces for images, due to copyright I have removed the pictures that I use, but they can easily by added.

Rainforest Protection and Use Decision Making Task

Rainforest Protection and Use Decision Making Task

Ideal for KS3 or KS4. The worksheet deals with land use in the Indonesian rainforest and asks pupils to read about the standpoints of different groups including miners, farmers, local council members and others and make a decision on how to use the rainforest most effectively. This culminates in pupils using a map of Borneo (given on the worksheet) to zone different land uses in the most appropriate places and explain why they chose each area. The sheet can work as an activity on its own or could be used to scaffold a debate task. Resource created for the Environmental Management part of Geography IGCSE Theme 3 but could be used at various levels as the language in the task is not too challenging.

Rainforests (Kho Yai National Park in Thailand)

Rainforests (Kho Yai National Park in Thailand)

A 6 lesson scheme of work planned for Year 7 students using photographs from my own trip to the rainforest in Thailand as a more unusual case study. The scheme of work covers location, climate and adaptations of plants and animals to the rainforest. Lesson 4 was my particular favourite as we cleared all the chairs and tables to the sides of the classroom and (using the photographs in the presentation as inspiration) took a virtual field trip to the rainforest together. Lesson 5 and 6 are based on the Making Animals activity from the original Thinking Through Geography book by David Leat. A copy of this would be useful for these two lessons. You will also find a copy of the Geog.2 textbook useful.
