Life Goals! A motivational and interactive workbook

Life Goals! A motivational and interactive workbook

This workbook has been designed as an interactive, thought provoking and interesting guide to life for those disenfranchised students that need that extra motivation and support in school and designed by a school SENCO. It has 14 pages packed full of questions, activities, puzzles and tasks, all designed to make students question, what am I doing this for? It can be used with students who have been removed from mainstream lessons/placed in an isolation room, students that have arrived on a placement from another school, or even just to help students look at what they want their future to be! It has been highly successful in it’s current setting, and works best when a student is working individually, or as part of a group with teacher facilitation, it gives an opportunity for you to learn more about a student, what motivates them, makes them tick, and what you can do to support them where perhaps others are currently failing. Designed as a running document with fun rest breaks in between, student feedback has been overwhelmingly positive! Especially the equipment Maze!

Frog killing fungus - the amphibian plague

Frog killing fungus - the amphibian plague

Interview with Professor Matthew Fisher (Imperial College, London) about his research on the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis that causes the often lethal disease, Chytridiomycosis in amphibians. Images of dead frogs and video of living frogs and tadpoles. Download a transcript of the interview here: http://www.understandinganimalresearch.org.uk/files/5914/6348/0796/Matthew_Fisher_interview_Imperial_Fungi_Frogs.pdf UAR interviewed Matthew Fisher of Imperial University London about his work on the fungus, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) currently devastating amphibian species around the world. Matthew and his team have been the first to successfully treat infected frogs and their tadpoles. They ‘cured’ individual midwife toads (Alytes obstetricans) with a dilute solution of a fungicide Itraconazole and after cleaning their habitat in the mountains of Majorca were able to re-introduce the species where they had previously become locally extinct. This is the first time amphibians have been successfully re-introduced following an outbreak of Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis. While this method is not an answer to removing the fungus from the wider environment it does make it possible for people to remove threatened species into captivity and maintain them in ‘arks’ until their descendants can be returned to the wild. Ferrets used to study human flu

Ferrets used to study human flu

Ferrets catch the flu and exhibit similar symptoms to us so they are used in research to make flu vaccines and to better understand why this disease is so good at making us ill. Here Professor Wendy Barclay of Imperial College London explains their role in her research. The ferrets we see are used to train scientists in how to handle the animals. We could not film the research ferrets because we might have given them a cold! Studying Ultradian rhythms in voles

Studying Ultradian rhythms in voles

Dr Daan van der Veen is a lecturer in sleep and chronobiology at Surrey University. He has worked with voles (Microtus arvalis) because these animals naturally live in a fast, ultradian rhythm. They feed and socialise for a few hours and then sleep for an hour or so before repeating this cycle three or four times a day. The animals are kept in deep litter so they can burrow, and provided with an exercise wheel in each cage to allow them to use up their restless energy. In chronobiology, an ultradian rhythm is a recurrent period or cycle repeated throughout a 24-hour day. In contrast, circadian rhythms complete one cycle daily, while infradian rhythms such as the human menstrual cycle have periods longer than a day. The Oxford English Dictionary’s definition of Ultradian specifies that it refers to cycles with a period shorter than a day but longer than an hour. The descriptive term ultradian is used in sleep research in reference to the 90–120 minute cycling of the sleep stages during human sleep. Still Looking For A Teaching Job? Follow This Checklist

Still Looking For A Teaching Job? Follow This Checklist

Teaching is the dream profession of many young graduates. It gives them a chance to be heard and share their knowledge with others. It’s a great profession for those who have leadership skills and want to be social. If you have applied to a number of teaching positions and still haven’t become successful, here’s a checklist for you: Consider moving Instead of limiting your job search to your neighboring schools and colleges, send the applications to big schools even if they are far away. If you get selected, you can always move to another city. After all, a job at a premiere college or school will be a great move for your career. Get your paperwork ready Make sure you have your resume, cover letter, and other documents ready. Proofread your resume several times to make sure it does not have any mistakes. Be available on social networks Your presence on social media networks like LinkedIn can help you build connections. If you are connected to administrators from colleges and schools, there are chances that they will prefer you over others when it’s time to hire. Attend job fairs Attend the job fairs held at your alma mater along with those at the neighboring colleges and universities. You have better chances of being selected at your alma mater than the others. Prepare for the interview There are some questions that are asked frequently. For example, “what can you bring to this school” and “how do you plan to influence the students”. Come up with witty and professional answers for these questions. Share vignettes Be open during the interview and share some positive vignettes about your previous experiences. These could include student achievements, classroom management, and unique teaching methodologies that you follow. Follow-up Sometimes the college or school might take extra time in hiring. If you follow up using emails, there are higher chances of you being hired. When you email them, state again that you would love to work with them. Stay positive It’s a tough economy but teaching positions keep opening every now and then in various schools and colleges. Don’t give up hope and you’ll soon bag a great teaching job. That’s it for now Busy Educator. Until next time, Talk to each other, support each other, take care of each other.’ Marjan

A comparison game not in any way similar to an aggressively copyrighted card matching game. You can even throw in a few pre-prepared cards of your own for popular courses such as Law at Oxford, Medicine, PPE, Engineering and so on. The fields are editable and the information can be found on the Universities own website, on UCAS, in Heap Degree course offers or in the Times/Guardian guides. While many employers leave the documentation part for the interview process, some of them may specify in the job description that they want to see them with the application.
