Unit of work: survival, healthy eating, healthy lifestyles and hygiene

Fun 5 lesson science unit of work for Year 2 animals including humans curriculum with a pirate theme. The pupils are the captain of their own ship and they have a very unhealthy crew that they must whip into shape! The unit begins with the basic needs of animals for survival and moves onto healthy lifestyles, including exercise, healthy eating and hygiene. I had lots of fun with my class teaching this unit and some good discussions which threw up misconceptions. Included in this resource are a detailed planning document with ideas for differentiation and extension plus all the digital resources required to deliver the lessons. You will get: - Planning document for the unit of work - Starter activity for session 1 - Presentation to support session 3 - Activity cards

Fire of London poetry - English unit of work

(2)
Planning, PowerPoint and activities for an engaging poetry unit based around a Fire of London topic. My Year 2s produced some excellent quality poetry that they were very proud of. I have included two examples of the children's poems (before and after editing) that you could share with your class. Each planned lesson is accompanied by the resources required to deliver it. The unit touches on many objectives from the 2013 English National Curriculum (Key Stage 1) and the main ones are listed at the beginning of the planning document. There was a spelling and grammar focus of adding -ing to verbs and using expanded noun phrases. I hope your class enjoy it as much as we did! This unit contains: - Planning document containing 5 sessions - An original fire poem with recurring literary language - Adding -ing activity cards - Vocabulary gathering mind map - Differentiated poem writing frames - Examples of children's poems before and after editing - High quality vocabulary cards and word mat

Volunteers in school kit

Get your parent/carer volunteers organised and briefed with one easy kit. We found at our school that we weren't 'getting the most' out of our volunteers in school when it came to 1:1 reading so I put together a briefing presentation/handout for volunteers. Feedback from our volunteers was very positive as they felt more confident and that they were being more useful. The presentation also covers health and safety and confidentiality to set expectations from the outset. The kit includes: - initial letter to parents/carers - invitation to a volunteer briefing - the briefing presentation including health and safety, confidentiality, tips for supporting early readers and next steps for readers - a volunteer 1:1 reading record (one copy per pupil)

Conjunctions display poster

Posters to encourage children to use a variety of conjunctions (and spell them correctly!) in their writing. 2016 interim assessment framework: using co-ordination (or / and / but) and some subordination (when / if / that / because). I got a bit carried away playing around with colours, hopefully you'll find one to suit you! If there's a colour you'd prefer, drop me a message and I'll see if I can do it for you. 2013 National Curriculum Key Stage 1 English programme of study (Year 2): Pupils should be taught to learn how to use subordination (using when, if, that, or because) and co-ordination (using or, and, or but).

Flexible planning document for Year 2 money objectives and problem solving. This resource includes: - A flexible money planning document including national curriculum end of year objectives for this domain, learning journey and initial lesson plan. To be used as a working document, use the learning journey to plan the next steps for your learners, responding each day to their progress and needs. - Three pirate menus for use with the lesson plan and containing differentiated prices. These menus are certainly reusable to hit other objectives in the learning journey. 2013 National Curriculum Key Stage 1 mathematics programme of study (Year 2): Pupils should be taught to: - recognise and use symbols for pounds (£) and pence (p); combine amounts to make a particular value  - find different combinations of coins that equal the same amounts of money  - solve simple problems in a practical context involving addition and subtraction of money of the same unit, including giving change

One-step problem-solving for addition and subtraction - pirate themed

Three pages of differentiated, pirate-themed addition and subtraction word problems (one step only). When I use these, I cut them up or get the children to cut them up and stick them in individually, which allows space to show their working and avoids pages full of worksheets glued in. Each page makes specific reference to the 2013 National Curriculum Key Stage 1 Mathematics programme of study (Year 2 expectations): Pupils should be taught to add and subtract numbers using concrete objects, pictorial representations, and mentally, including:  - a two-digit number and ones  - a two-digit number and tens  - two two-digit numbers 

Frooby the Maths Dragon throws a tea party but will the fussy blue witch spoil his carefully prepared tea party? Revise or introduce symmetry in a vertical line with your class using the Return of Frooby story powerpoint. Follow-up the story with some Frooby-themed images for sorting, drawing or describing lines of symmetry. Key stage 1 mathematics programme of study --> Year 2 --> Geometry - properties of shape - identify and describe the properties of 2-D shapes, including the number of sides and line symmetry in a vertical line

Fire of London - writing commands - English unit of work

(0)
Unit of work including power points, activity cards and writing frame for teaching command sentences. Based on the Fire of London and the commands that King Charles II gave during and after the fire, pupils role play the part of King Charles and l. earn how to write commands using imperative verbs. Our Year 2s loved this unit, in particular the role play element. In hindsight, I would have split session 3 into two sessions as the children enjoyed the acting so much. The whole class, even the less able, were able to identify a command sentence with confidence following this unit - even many months afterwards. Most were able to write commands independently in a variety of contexts. This resource contains: - the planning document (4-5 lessons) - powerpoints to support teaching of the unit - activity cards to support less able and whole class improvement of speaking and listening - speaking and listening learning journeys to share with pupils - a writing template

Social stories for tackling behaviour issues

A behaviour consultant once recommended I use social stories to tackle persistent behaviours in class. However, I found these hard to find relevant to my particular needs so I wrote some myself. The stories explain very specifically the behaviours being exhibited and the effects and feelings that these behaviours create. I wrote these stories for real children so please excuse the lack of ethnic diversity and gender bias, this happened to be my demographic at the time of writing! Contact me if you would like an updated version to suit your pupils. I read the 'calling out' story to a bright boy who persistently called out in class and it was like a revelation to him. He hadn't considered how it affected other children. He said, "This boy is a bit like me, isn't he?" His calling out improved dramatically and when it inevitably slipped, we simply got the story out again and re-read it. Much better than repeated tellings off and squashing his spirit! I used the other two stories similarly and enjoyed the discussions I had with the children involved.

I use this spreadsheet for my tracking. It includes groups that my school is focussing on and allows you to filter by these groups e.g., Free School Meals, EAL, summer/spring/autumn birthdays, etc.. It will be easy to change the column headings to include groups that your school is focussing on.\n\nThere is a tab for each of maths, reading, literacy and science.

Presentations for teaching split digraphs

Four powerpoints covering the split digraphs o_e, i_e, e_e and u_e. \nFirst slide - revise\nNext - teach using 2 examples\nFinally - practise using 2 examples\n\nUp to you to decide on the apply stage!\n\nSorry there are no a_e slides, the children have not encountered ae as a grapheme so it doesn't apply to this strategy for teaching split digraphs!

KS2 Math revision slides - easy points

I put together these revision slides for my less able Year 4s. When it came to maths papers, they persistently forgot 'easy' maths that they could do in class, so we revised them to death with these slides for some easy points on the papers!
