Rhythmajig is a primary music curriculum offering provision above and beyond the new National Curriculum 2014 requirements. Children are introduced to fun and engaging characters representing rhythmic notation eg Crotchet, Minim etc from year R and are taught to read and write stave notation from year 2. 6 week unit of work focusing on an imaginary journey to Ocarock City, where children visit different locations to learn to read and write rhythmic notation. The Rhythmajig charaters, with their memorable colours and actions, introduce real musical vocabulary and concepts. Shee tmusic/ song pack and resource pack also available. Note: Lots of songs are included- these don't all need to be learned, you can just listen with your class to the studio recordings (see song pack). Print these cards or show on the IWB and match them to the notation characters. Get children thinking about the colours: Crotchet (red) walks and has one beat, Minim (blue) sli-ides and has two beats, Quaver twins (yellow) go jogging and have half a beat each, Semibreve (green) goes whoo-oo-oo-oosh and has 4 beats, Restful Mouse (white) rests quietly when the music stops. Another good activity is to print multiple copies of the cards and use them to build ostinati (musical patterns) on the carpet, children can then chant them using the movements listed above. www.rhythmajig.co.uk
