KS3: Blues Music (Distance Learning)

This is a 6-week project on Blues Music. I would normally teach Blues music in a practical way however, this is a project designed as a composition task to be completed on BandLab, which these students have not done before so it also includes a ‘how to’ for what they need to do. There are several smaller tasks (research task, performance tasks, quiz) and one main task, I’ve asked students to either complete the practicals on a keyboard or a keyboard app but the main bulk is all BandLab.

There is a quiz included and one main task, a submission on BandLab.

This is a three lesson PowerPoint on Baroque music suitable for the Eduqas music GCSE course. It covers the key features, instruments and many of the musical devices required for this AOS. It does not include anything on forms as we cover that in our Classical Era work. There is also a worksheet about instruments of the orchestra. Many of the sound links are embedded through the star symbols.

This scheme of work was designed for year 7 students at the very beginning of their secondary career. It was taught over 7 weeks and explored duple, triple, quadruple metre, polyrhythm and notating rhythm. The culmination project took inspiration from STOMP and encouraged students to use items from their pencil case to create a polyrhythmic performance.

New GCSE: AOS2 Pop Music from 1990 (AQA)

I wrote this powerpoint to fit with the new AQA's new GCSE specification. Pop music from 1990-present fits within Area of Study 2. To accompany this presentation, students worked through the timeline document which was in their books. My teaching focus here is key musical features and how the music sounds, not key facts about the sub genres. Listening examples have been hyperlinked within the green stars.

This is a scheme of work I designed for year 8 students to look into musicals. Due to the nature of the scheme of work (provided) I can only provide the first lessons PowerPoint. I am simultaneously teaching two separate musicals, depending on the overall ability of the class, both of which are included in this purchase. Students really enjoy this unit and are able to fully immerse in the topic.

Every time the text is in bold with a keyboard picture at the end, this is a task, some of them are practical others are written. There are six google quizzes as part of this. They require YouTube (these are linked in the test) and some of them have audio files on the slides. In total this should take you 3 lessons.

KS3: Music in Advertising (Distance Learning)

This is music in advertising project I’m doing with year 8 and 9 this half term. involves them designing a product and creating a radio advert for the product to include an underscore, jingle and voiceover. Currently it’s geared up for google suite, for example it says things like “upload your answers to google classroom” but this is easily adaptable for your softwares. I teach this live on google meet and share the PowerPoint with the students but it could be done entirely remotely. As students are doing it remotely I’m allowing them to do it with any software they may have access to, or on an instrument or using BandLab education online. I’ve included links for how to use GarageBand and BandLab to support students.
