Hero: Malcolm X
A lesson from the Hero topic. Looking at Malcolm X’s ideas on tackling racism, reasons for him changing his name, how he differed from Martin Luther King, the ways his Muslim beliefs changed his view on white people and information on his assassination. Black Lives Matter.

A full unit which looks at different heroes from around the world: the Dalai Lama, Gandhi, Malcolm X, Mary Magdalene and Mother Teresa.
Key information and sources of wisdom and authority linked to each hero is shared. Lessons include video links, questions they can self/peer assess and discussion points.
The lessons look at whether someone can still be a hero if they have flaws. For example, Gandhi made several racist statements when he was younger and Mother Teresa was criticised for how the money they raised was spent, as well as promoting her extreme Catholic views.
Issues relating to racism, feminism, sexism, Black Lives Matter and colonisation are covered.
This topic is taught as part of the Key Stage 3 Religious Studies curriculum.

The third lesson in the Hip Hop topic. Students will look at the themes of misogynoir, intersectionality and white woman tears. The views of Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche on Beyonce’s feminism are discussed. Students will listen to ‘Keep Ya Head Up’ by 2Pac, ‘Ladies First’ by Queen Latifah and ‘Love is Blind’ by Eve.
Society and Hip Hop: 2 Hurricane Katrina
The second lesson in the Hip Hop topic. Looks at George Bush’s response to Hurricane Katrina and the implications the disaster had on people, especially Black people, in New Orleans, as well as the way Black people were portrayed as “looters” by the media when looking for food. The lesson looks at songs by Lil Wayne, Mos Def and K-Otix which refer to the natural disaster.
Society and Hip Hop: 5 Black Lives Matter
Students will learn about the themes of structural racism and gaslighting. They will discuss the findings of the Sewell Report and the criticisms of it. They will listen to ‘Black and Ready’ by Jords.
