This complete lesson was designed as part of an English Unit for year 10 English: Representations of adolescents. Included is a basic lesson plan to show how long each activity should be conducted for. As well as PowerPoint with clips and a worksheet with questions.

Originally taught to a year 10 English class this could be used for any high school age group looking at monologue writing. Complete the lesson with some video clips of famous monologues from a movie, TV or theatre production.

I use this lesson to teach high school students who are struggling with writing their assessments. For example I designed this after marking drafts for monologues and found that most of the students had too many simple sentences and not enough detail or expression of ideas and emotions. It is a great resource if you have a mixed ability class, for those with low literacy it helps them to vary their sentence length and type so they communicate complex ideas and avoid repetition. For students with advanced skills it helps them to better understand how they can use grammar to a greater effect to improve or challenge their writing. This PowerPoint covers: What is a clause (in easy to understand ways) Sentence Types (declarative, interrogative, imperative and exclamatory) and the grammar you use for each. Explanations and quick funny writing activities for - Simple - Compound - Complex Through out the power point gifs are used of pop culture references (that also provide examples of the sentence types in action) as well as funny pictures. This power point should only take one lesson with some time to spare to set homework or work on drafts. To complete this lesson, use the last slide that has dot points on how they can use these new skills in their draft. While this power point was tailored to a creative writing unit, this power point has also been used as a refresher lesson for writing essays.
