At the present time I am Head of Science at an independent Prep School. Teaching KS3 Science so the majority of resources are KS3. I teach several year groups in mixed ability sets so most of my resource included differentiated resources to enable all students to engage whatever their ability level. In previous job taught AQA Triple Science so a selection of resources for teaching these concepts also can be found here.

Energy in Food Investigation

(13)
This was done over two lessons - the first lesson was spent planning the investigation and naming the variables - see differentiated planning sheet - my pupils are all grouped according to ability (they had to come up with a method of measuring the energy content of a bit of food in groups) I then showed them the experimental set up so that the next lesson they could come in and start working straight away. A third lesson was spent writing up and evaluating - high ability group had to write up independently - low ability were given lots of the resources attached.

Wind Turbine Challenge

(1)
I run this challenge after teaching a unit on renewable and non renewable energy sources. The activity is taken from Practical Action's website. I've done this with two mixed ability classes and it works really well - everyone very involved and some great critical thinking going on while discussing designs etc.

Photosynthesis Revision Lesson

(26)
This is a set of resources that I created/adapted for use with a Yr 8 class who were revising photosynthesis. Included is a ppt that I use with the class - getting them to write answers on mini whiteboards as I go through it. Summary worksheet that I use as a starter, then a puzzle to use as a plenary (print out slides onto A4 sheets then cut them out and give them to groups to complete)

Intro to Food Groups and differentiated worksheets

This is adapted ppt I found on TES (thank you) - now includes loads of assessment opportunities as you go through - I was observed during this lesson and was rated outstanding. The game where the students have to say which food group someone is lacking or needs is done by giving all students 4 pieces of card - 1 red, 1 blue, 1 green and 1 yellow - I then explain the problem/situation and count down from 3 to 0, at 0 all students have to hold up coloured card that matches the required nutrient - great to quickly see who is struggling!

Differentiated group task - Separating Mixtures

(3)
This is a task I give students at the end of the separating mixtures unit - the students are grouped into ability groups (Squid = HIgh, Crab = Mid, Starfish = Low) I show them a sample of dirty Rock salt - their task is to plan how to separate a sample of pure salt from the rock salt using these planning sheets - I blow them up to A3 to give them plenty of room to write on as a group
Planning an investigation to prove the reactants of rusting

Planning an investigation to prove the reactants of rusting

(5)
This lesson is taught in a series of lessons on different chemical reactions, following on from a lesson that went through why some metals corrode, what is needed for corrosion/rusting to occur and how to prevent corrosion. This was taught to a top set Yr 8 set who are set into two animal groups (squid = top, crab = bottom). Lesson is differentiated for the two groups to allow individual work for the top group and paired work for the bottom half - worksheet attached to enable bottom group to achieve LO. We spend one lesson planning this and then set up the expt during next lesson and leave it to run over half term to maximize time for rusting. In my school I use this lesson to assess one strand of scientific investigative skills that count towards our School's Baccalaureate.

Importance of Gene Banks

(4)
Powerpoint that leads you through the importance of gene banks. Links to the Seed Bank set up by the Norwegian Government up in Arctic circle - complete with question sheet for students to fill in as they listen. Also video link to how Kew Gardens are using gene banks to protect plant biodiversity

Pathogens

(6)
General introduction to pathogens - what they are, what they do once in body. Also covers work of Semmelweis and Marshall & Warren.

Using drugs to treat disease

Ppt that goes through the differences between medicines and antibiotics and the effect both have on the pathogen causing the illness. We inoculated some agar plates at the end of the lesson to practise the culture of bacteria and aseptic techniques.
Digestion, Breathing & Respiration Mindmap

Digestion, Breathing & Respiration Mindmap

(7)
A4 sheet covering main points of Digestion, Breathing and Respiration - used as revision tool before unit test. I give it out to students as starter - they then complete as much as they can from their own revision before we go through answers as class using attached ppt - I find this format leads to a very productive revision lesson
World Science Day Package 2

World Science Day Package 2

This is a group of resources that contains all you need to run a World Science Day/Week in your school. Every year I put on a week devoted to Science at my Prep School. I have competitions for each Year group (Yr 1 - 8) as well as Science Assembly where I do demos etc. For Yr 3/4 Competition I laminated the animal fact cards and hid them around the school so they had to search to find them. For the Seniors (Yr 5 - 8) I hid the fact cards (that I found on TES - thanks!) around the school for them to find.

KS3 Energy/Fuels/Photosynthesis Revision

Useful for end of KS3 exams - I print out the student version of the ppt with four slides per page - they then fill in the gaps as we go through ppt in class. They then can stick two sheets back to back on a piece of card and cut them out to make 4 double sided revision cards. My students love this way of revising.

Intro to the periodic table

(9)
A ppt that introduces the concept of the periodic table and talks through some of the patterns shown by the elements. Activities included - some taken from other contributors - thank you! Blank periodic table included which I got students to colour in to reinforce patterns of metals, non-metals and metalloids.

Sustainability - Recycling Activity Collection

(11)
Resource collect to help students create a recycling campaign to encourage staff and students to be responsible with the resources they use. This was run as a 2hr activity for a Yr 7 science lesson to encourage group work and creative thinking. It worked extremely well with some excellent presentations taking place at the end of the second lesson. The planning sheet was blown up to A3. Starter activity borrowed from another TES resource - thank you!

Moja Island - Renewable Energy Group Task

(17)
Excellent group activity to use after teaching about different forms of renewable energy. The original resources are from Practical Action website (thank you). I used this with 2 different Yr 7 classes (high and low ability) and both loved it and very engaged. How to run activity: Each group needs I community card, a set of renewable energy cards, a map and a worksheet. They then need to decide which renewable energy would be suitable for each of their villages. I get groups to present their ideas to rest of class and we then peer assess each others choices.

How to write a Scientific Conclusion

(0)
My students always seen to struggle to write a good scientific conclusion so I collaborated with my colleagues in the English Dept to come up with a way to help them. We used the PEE paragraph as a starting point and produced these posters to help the students. I then used it with a practical we were doing at that time (which shaped tea bag makes the strongest tea) to demonstrate a good conclusion.
