This is a whole week of class guided reading based on the two poems above (you can download the poems easily from the internet). Each day focuses on a different skill: Monday - text type, prediction and summarising; Tuesday - vocabulary and grammar; Wednesday - retrieval; Thursday - inference and Friday is then a combination of all skills. Teaching guided reading this way is proven to up rates of progress and achievement by 40% and it has had a huge impact on my year 6 results already! Answer and a script for teaching are also included. This can be accessed by nearly all children as the questions get harder as they go down (challenge questions in purple).
This is an English 4 week unit of work based on the book ‘Wonderscape’ for the last half-term for year 6. It is focused around transition activities and planned in the way that children will learn English at secondary school. It includes starters, spellings, main teaching, differentiated activities and plenaries. There are some resources included. I have smartboards for each unit but I can’t upload them due to copywrite. A full 2 weeks of lesson planning on persuasive writing. This was based around a real-life context. The planning includes grammar, spellings, teaching and outcome which is differentiated as needed for greater depth and SEND children. It also includes all of the resources I have made myself. Unfortunately, I cannot include resources such as the smartboards due to copyright, but if you buy this resource and you want them, then just leave your email address in a review and I can send them over to you.
This powerpoint trains staff how to teach children to read fluently and explores what it takes to be a fluent reader, including the end of year expectations for years 2 and 6. It has ideas for activities that staff can do to help children become fluent readers, including a punctuation game. It also goes through what a greater depth reader looks like and shows staff how to write questions for greater depth readers and stretch and challenge them. There is also a bit at the end about the explicit and implicit teaching of vocabulary.
This resource is for years5/6 whole class guided reading. It focuses on a different skill each day and includes answers. It’s made a real difference to the level of reading in my class. You will need to download the poem ‘Talking Turkeys’ online, but it’s easy to find for free. The idea is to teach the skills and then take away the support a bit more each day so that by Friday, the children work independently.
