Each day focuses on a different skill: Monday - text type, prediction and summarising; Tuesday - vocabulary and grammar; Wednesday - retrieval; Thursday - inference and Friday is then a combination of all skills. Teaching guided reading this way is proven to up rates of progress and achievement by 40% and it has had a huge impact on my year 6 results already! Answer and a script for teaching are also included. This can be accessed by nearly all children as the questions get harder as they go down (challenge questions in purple).

This 4-5 week unit of persuasive writing is based around the book ‘The Curse of the Maya.’ It links perfectly with the Ancient Maya Civilisation topic. It includes 4-5 weeks of writing planning based around the book and the children eventually write a leaflet to persuade people to visit Guatemala and a persuasive letter to the British government. The planning includes grammar, spellings, teaching and outcome which is differentiated as needed for greater depth and SEND children. It also includes all of the resources I have made myself. Unfortunately, I cannot include resources such as the smartboards due to copyright, but if you buy this resource and you want them, then just leave your email address in a review and I can send them over to you.

Year 5/6 whole class guided reading (1 week) - Talking Turkeys poem

This resource is for years5/6 whole class guided reading. It focuses on a different skill each day and includes answers. It’s made a real difference to the level of reading in my class. You will need to download the poem ‘Talking Turkeys’ online, but it’s easy to find for free. The idea is to teach the skills and then take away the support a bit more each day so that by Friday, the children work independently.
