Qualify your experienced teachers in just 12 weeks

Our Assessment Only route can help your school:

  • Increase the number of staff with qualified teacher status (QTS)
  • Qualify staff while they continue to work at your school
  • Develop your own qualified teacher workforce

Retain and develop talented staff

Many trusted and talented TAs and teachers need to leave schools, just like yours, to gain QTS which means you lose great members of staff and your pupils lose an inspirational teacher.

Our Assessment Only route can help your staff with significant teaching experience to achieve QTS in just 12 weeks. It’s an alternative route to QTS that allows your staff to be independently assessed against the English Teachers’ Standards and on successful completion, be awarded QTS and become a newly qualified teacher (NQT).

  • Your school will need to verify compliance documentation for the member of staff and provide a testimony for their employment at the school.

  • The assessment period will take no longer than 12 weeks and can be started at almost any point in the year.

  • Our Assessment Only route is available in all school settings including primary, secondary, mainstream, SEND, alternative provision, independent and boarding schools.

  • Our Assessment Only route costs £3,000 (plus VAT)* and can be paid for by your member of staff, your school or split between both parties.

*Subject to exceptions, VAT will be charged at the rate of 20 per cent.

Do your staff need some preparation first?

If your staff aren't ready for QTS assessment, our Straight to Teaching course can provide them with a tailored preparation programme, giving them the extra help they need to improve their teaching and gain enough experience for our Assessment Only route.

All without leaving your school.

Suitable candidates for Assessment Only route

This route is aimed at school staff with a degree and significant teaching experience who can demonstrate that they already meet the English Teachers’ Standards without the need for any additional preparation or training. The Assessment Only route can take as little as 12 weeks to complete and gives staff the opportunity to become a qualified teacher without leaving their current school.

Approved provider

Tes Institute is an approved Assessment Only provider and will be able to assess your staff member in your school and provide them with the opportunity to demonstrate that they meet the Teachers' Standards with an evidence portfolio.

A Tes Institute pathway tutor will visit them in school, observing lessons and reviewing their portfolio of evidence in order to verify that they meet the criteria before recommending them for QTS assessment. For the assessment, an independent assessor will observe lessons and inspect their portfolio of evidence and, if they are successful, recommend them for QTS.

The Department for Education (DfE) will award QTS based on our assessor’s recommendation.

Start dates

With start dates throughout the year, your staff can start our Assessment Only route at a time that is right for them and your school.

Thoughts from our schools

The different routes into teaching give individuals the flexibility to find a route which suits our school and their needs. I would highly recommend Tes as they guided us through the whole process, taking the stress out of the situation.
