How to assess subject knowledge- does a candidate need SKE?

Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE)
100% online courses to boost your trainee's knowledge before starting ITT.
Give your trainee's a head start with their subject knowledge and teaching confidence with our 100% online, tutor-supported, Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) courses which can be studied before or alongside Initial Teacher Training (ITT).
Our courses are designed to help prospective trainee teachers develop their understanding of their subject within the context of teaching it in a classroom.
Courses are available in biology, chemistry, computing, English, French, geography, German, maths, primary maths, physics and Spanish.
The Department for Education (DfE) will provide full funding for an SKE course as long as you add a condition to your trainee's offer stating that the SKE course will enable the trainee to access their training programme.
Additional bursaries are also available for trainees with a 2:2 degree or higher. (Please be aware that the DfE make decisions on funding and there are implications when an SKE overlaps with ITT training).
Yes, all of our SKE courses are delivered online as we believe this provides trainees with the greatest amount of flexibility and allows them to fit learning around their personal and work life.
Trainees will receive online tutor support throughout their course which can be blended with any face-to-face training that you deliver.
You’ll receive regular checkpoint reports every four weeks that will outline your trainee's progress and provide suggestions of areas for improvement. You'll also receive a final detailed report once they finish their course.
Yes, we also provide SKE courses for teachers who have already qualified. These are designed slightly differently in order to fit around a full timetable and you can find out more about them here.
Courses range from 8-28 weeks depending on the subject and the level of your trainee's existing subject knowledge. The shorter courses can also be available as a part-time option.
Our SKE courses are currently offered monthly until January when they will increase to fortnightly, giving you and your trainees more choice.
Trainees will receive regular reports and feedback as well as dedicated support from subject specialist pathway tutors.
