About English Schools Foundation

The English Schools Foundation (ESF) (www.esf.edu.hk) was established by the Hong Kong Government in 1967 and is the largest education foundation in Asia offering a liberal education through the medium of the English language to children of school age.
ESF currently operates five secondary schools, nine primary schools and a school for students with special educational needs across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories. Two "all-through" Private Independent Schools (PIS) and four kindergartens are operated by ESF's affiliated company, ESF Educational Services Ltd. (www.esf.org.hk), which also offers English language classes and sports activities.

The curriculum, leading to the International Baccalaureate (IB), is adapted to Hong Kong and the Asia Pacific region. ESF's teachers are highly qualified, with experience of the UK, Australian and other international school systems. School facilities are safe, secure and of the highest standards. All schools offer a broad range of out-of-school activities in Hong Kong and overseas. ESF schools are strongly supported by thriving and dynamic parent-teacher associations.

The 13,000 students in ESF schools and the 4,000 in the PIS and the kindergartens include over 50 different nationalities. About 70% of our students have parents who are permanent residents of Hong Kong. We are proud of our high academic standards and the excellent achievements of our students – more than 95% go on to leading universities worldwide.
Teach in HONG KONG with ESF (Start in August!)

We offer a range of teaching opportunities in our kindergartens, primary and secondary schools to start the new academic year especially in August every year. Last year, in February – April 2012, we recruited nearly 140 new teachers – many from schools worldwide.

Teaching vacancies will be advertised on our website (http://recruit.esf.edu.hk) from 14 December 2012 to 20 January 2013 (UK mid-night time). More teaching vacancies will be posted in January 2013.
We reward our teachers with benefits commensurate with their skills and professional standing in the community.

A typical package of a ESF primary/secondary school teacher would include:

• Basic salary up to approximately GBP53,790 p.a.
• Additional responsibility allowance from GBP3,147 to GBP12,566 p.a.
• A gratuity payment (20% on basic salary) on completion of each 2 year contract

Our Schools

All ESF schools are characterised by dedicated staff and a commitment to providing an excellent education through the medium of English. We believe in educating the whole child to achieve his or her maximum potential, both academically and in cultural and sporting activities.

At the same time, our schools have developed their own traditions and characteristics. Geographically dispersed, they also reflect the cultural diversity of Hong Kong.

Our Curriculum

ESF has traditionally taught the National Curriculum of England and Wales, adapted to the Hong Kong context. We used standardised assessments from Year 1 in order to measure progress and added value objectively. Schools are now moving to an overtly enquiry-based, investigative style of teaching and learning. Accordingly, primary schools are moving to the International Baccalaureate Organisation’s Primary Years Programme (PYP).

At secondary level, we continue with the adapted National Curriculum of England and Wales in Years 7 to 9, and then take GCSE and IGCSE courses. Renaissance and Discovery Colleges offer the IBO’s Middle Years Programme (MYP). At post-16, the majority of students follow the IB Diploma programme. At all levels, we seek to differentiate the curriculum to cater for students with learning difficulties, including at post-16, where we have introduced a four pathway model, the ESF Diploma.
