This lesson was created as an introduction to budgeting / saving for a one-off KS2 lesson, but would also work as a KS3 lesson (depending on whether they have been introduced to budgeting / saving before)
1) Have each student fill out the "Things to do at the Fair!" tick sheet - ticking all the things they would like to do at the fair.
2) Give out the "How much will it Cost?" information sheet so that students are able to fill in the "How much will it Cost?" calculation sheet. At the end of this step, each student should have a total amount amount of money they would need in order to do everything they wanted to do at the Fair.
3) Print out (on card if possible) and cut out all the money scenario cards. Hand one to each student and have them calculate how they will pay for their day at the Fair. (Depending on the class, it may work best to have them do this in partners so they can discuss with each other)
4) As an extension, students could a) discuss with the class what they will do to budget / save for their day at the Fair; b) they could think other ways to earn / save money; c) they could modify their "Things to do at the Fair" tick sheet so that it is more affordable; d) they could calculate how much a day at the fair would cost for their whole family.

This script is a kind of template - it can be used for any size class and be expanded to any length of time.
Oh, and did I mention Health and Safety?!
Sample Text:
Fire breather: Look at what fire breathers do!
(Fire breather breathes out fire)
(Everyone gasps and applauds; Narrator rushes on with fire extinguisher)
Narrator: Hey! Health and safety! Health and safety! Stop this now!
Sword swallower: And then there’s my act (holding up sword)
Narrator: (Intervening quickly) I have no idea what you intend doing with that sword – but not here, not now!
Sword swallower: But I was only going to swallow it (pauses) like this!
Narrator: (Shrieking) Stop now! That’s way too dangerous!
(Whole cast groans)
Sad Clown: You see? Always some health and safety spoilsport around these days to ruin our fun!
(Circus juggler walks up and down, juggling)
Narrator: Now, that’s more like it! Plenty of skill, no danger!
(Stilt walker walks up and down)
Narrator: (Applauding) Bravo!
(Contortionist and ‘Strong man’ perform, Narrator watching anxiously)
(Everyone gasps and applauds; Narrator rushes on with First Aid Kit)
Narrator: This really won’t do! What have I said about health and safety?
(Lion roars loudly)

A short unit of work designed for Key Stage 2 on wild animals performing in circuses. Each lesson is planned to take an hour, although there are plenty of opportunities to shorten or lengthen activities. This topic has many cross-curricular links, with strong links to the Science, English, Geography, SMSC and Citizenship curriculums.
Lesson 1. Animal Adaptations
To describe how different organisms are adapted to their environment
To explain why organisms succeed best in their own natural environments
Lesson 2. A day in the life of a tiger
To compare the life of a tiger in the wild with one in a circus
To write a diary entry entitled ‘A day in the life of a tiger’.
Lesson 3. Should all wild animals in circuses be banned?
To understand the arguments for and against banning wild animals in circuses
To form an opinion
To write a persuasive letter.
Context:
Globally, thousands of wild animals are used in circuses and forced to perform demeaning and unnatural tricks to entertain the public. The welfare of both domesticated and wild animals are often severely compromised in a circus environment.
Born Free is wholly opposed to the use of wild animals in circuses and considers the practice to be unethical. There is overwhelming evidence of compromised animal welfare in the circus environment.
Born Free works across the UK and Europe to bring an end to the use of wild animals in circuses and supports international campaign partners in their efforts. Where possible, Born Free rescues animals from appalling conditions in circuses. Over the years we have rescued and rehomed several big cats from circuses in France, Bulgaria, Italy and Germany. We provide them with high standard lifetime care in sanctuaries. However, these are the lucky ones.
