Built is squares.
Space to visually ‘build’ the question e.g. 3X2 is 3 groups of 2, draw it, to pictorially draw the question, write it to practice written numbers and solve it. Can be stuck in books or laminated. Used in Year 3. Could be used for place value, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction, fractions…
My first years (so far) attempt at new planning using the CPA approach for Year 1.
First half term uses classroom secrets resources but after that it doesn’t as I didn’t find them appropriate for Year 1 at all.
Lots of references to Nrich and NCTEM free resources.
YEAR 5 AND 6 MASTERY MATHS COVERS EVERY NUMBER OBJECTIVE IN THE NATIONAL CURRICULUM WITH: CONCRETE, PICTORIAL, ABSTRACT, FLUENCY, REASONING AND PROBLEM SOLVING OVER 240 IDEAS, ACTIVITIES AND TASKS WITH ASSESSMENT TRACKERS
3 A4 sheets on publisher. One each for objects, pictures, numbers and symbols. I used this on my numeracy display following a days training on the CPA approach.
This worksheet has a ten frame template, with a few questions for students to practice what two numbers makes up a ten.
**CPA Approach **
Concrete stage - using counters on the ten frame template to develop counting and addition skills
Pictorial stage - coloring the circles on the worksheet (by counting/adding) to represent the counters used in the concrete stage
This is a resource designed to support the CPA approach
-supports SEN / LA
-supports children struggling with presentation.
EDITABLE - you can edit the numbers.
First allow the children to count the ones
If there are more than 10 ones, you must cross out 10 ones and regroup to the tens column.
(Show this in Story Maths too!)
Then you can add the ones, tens and hundreds.
This is a resource designed to support learners with the column method addition (with regrouping) using the CPA (concrete, pictorial, abstract) approach.
This is a helpful resource for LA learners and/or learners who struggle with presentation in their books.
In the 'real maths side'
learners should
1.count the ones
2.if there are 10 or more ones, regroup to a ten stick (cross out ten ones)
3.Count how many ones are left
4. Count the tens
5. Count the hundreds
6. Draw the answer in real maths
7. Write the answer in story maths.
This is a very handy PowerPoint that I used to introduce the idea of ‘Mastery’ in Maths to my school. USeful for your own knowledge or use in own Staff Meeting/INSET Day.
It includes information taken from across the internet (NCETM, White Rose Maths, Primary Schools etc).
There are notes with each slide to help your talking and discussion points.

How to introduce White Rose Maths
This is an S plan (small steps) that uses White Rose and NCETM small steps. It breaks down the unit with CPA, misconceptions, problem solving & reasoning questions and key vocabulary.
This is for any school looking to describe accurately (for teachers, TAs, Govenors, parents etc) what the teaching of mathematics for written calculation looks like across their school from EYFS to Year 6.
It shows the developmental stages needed for children to progress through addition, subtraction, multiplication and division for each year group. It includes examples of what this might look like in the children’s work, what the teachers might teach in a lesson, and the possible manipulatives they could use. It shows a clear CPA approach to the teaching of written calculations.
It is a fluid document that shows how children can progress through the stages, whilst also going back to previous stages. It shows the links between each stage of the journey and how children can make connections between those stages themselves. It explains where the ARE child should be at the end and the beginning of each year group and the knowledge they should possess at each year stage.
If your school uses a different written method at any particular point it can easily be adapted, or used as a starting point for your own school’s written calculation policy. It follows a similar structure to the White Rose policy but goes into much greater detail, and therefore is a useful guide for NQTs or new Maths Subject Leads.
At booklet containing a variety of ideas for how parents can teach mathematics, unobtrusively, at home. It explains to parents concepts such as CPA and the National Curriculum aims; language and particular questions to ask; simple mathematical equipment that might be lying around the home and how to use it; a variety of exciting and stimulating games to play; and a list of useful, up to date websites to go to and apps to download.
This is especially useful if you are trying to increase communication with parents at your school.
Success Criteria PDF A simple checklist of strategies (including CPA) that students can use to achieve Mastery in Maths. This resource encourages students to:
work independently
make appropriate choices on how solve problems
accurately explain mathematical reasoning
This resource is aimed for KS1 and includes visual aids to ensure students can access the resource.
