a good starter/ revision activity on analysing and processing numbers to work out fractions, decimails, ratio or % from whole numbers. it also covers probability (OR/ AND RULE) and other averages. I will be suitable for L2/ GCSE students on F/H tiers. I have used it for my revision classes and it was a good resource.

Handling Data - Introducing Block Graphs, Pictograms and Tally Marks

There are 4 presentations in total and each of them provides a simple introduction to data handling for young learners. They present information in: block graph form tally chart form pictogram form They are ideal lesson starters as they are clear and concise. They encourage the learners to actively record answers on mini whiteboards. Answers to each slide question follows on to provide immediate correction as the learners show their whiteboard answers. This ensures whole class/group engagement in the task as well as providing immediate teacher assessment. It is easier to see who is managing the task well and those who are struggling to interpret the charts etc. The emphasis is on interpreting simple data. There is added challenge when children are asked to analyse and identify the most popular or least popular item as well as comparing two different items. These presentations offer the children some raw data that they have not had to collect themselves. This can be useful: the teacher knows that everyone has the same information without worrying about the accuracy of recording methods. So, the children can focus on analysis rather than collection at this stage. I have found this approach an ideal introduction and children are more confident when they are asked to interpret data more independently. I have uploaded several jpg files so teachers can peruse the resources more comprehensively. I hope that your children enjoy these active tasks. I would be delighted if feedback was provided.

Great worksheet to help learners develop basic data handling skills- counting, recording, adding and comparing data. Learners carry out survey by asking their classmates the means of transport they use to school, record their names and tick against the means of transport on a chart. They then use the data on the chart to workout the total number of people that use each means of transport, the most popular and the least popular means of transport.

Year 1 Tally Charts using Jungle animals and handling data

(0)
A resource created to teach year 1 children about handling data and creating tally charts. Children were told that we are going on a trip to the jungle and that in their packs there were some animals that needed to be released back into the wild. The first activity was to sort the animals (this was the whole session for my LA children), they then used the animal pictures to complete the tally chart (a discussion happened here to recap what a tally chart is and what to do when we count five of something). Afterwards the children were to answer the questions about their tally chart. As a next step or reasoning question the children were asked to write their own question to ask someone about the tally chart, there was a frame to support children in this.
