Higher education institutions worldwide are adopting flexible learning methods and online technologies which increase the potential for widening the learning community to include people for whom participation may previously have been difficult or impossible. The development of courseware that is accessible, flexible and informative can benefit not only people with special needs, but such courseware provides a better educational experience for all students.

LGBT+ Inclusion Assemblies: Secondary School

(2)
This interactive assembly looks at LGBT+ rights in the UK, offering students a chance to reflect on how far we’ve come and the work we still have to do to ensure everyone is accepted and supported to be themselves. A ‘guess who’ activity and clear definitions introduce students to LGBT+ identities. A timeline outlines the key milestones in the struggle for equality and a quiz highlights these positive steps while building an understanding of the work that is still to be done in areas such as sport and tackling bullying. Discussions on how to make the school more LGBT+ inclusive ask students to consider the impact of homophobic, biphobic and transphobic language and practical ways they can be an active ally to their LGBT+ peers. The pack contains two versions, one lasting 20 minutes and an extended 40 minute version that includes a video scripted by an LGBT Youth Group that shows how ‘silence helps homophobia’ and how students, staff and parents/carers can work together to create LGBT+ inclusive schools. The assembly is perfect for LGBT History Month, International Day Against Homophobia Biphobia and Transphobia, Anti-Bullying Week and Pride. The assembly is suitable for Year 7-11 and teachers can differentiate the discussions around the timeline, quiz and how to create an inclusive school. The assembly supports work on SMSC, British Values, RSE, PSHE and helps schools meet their Ofsted and statutory obligations. Diversity Role Models are a registered charity that actively seeks to embed inclusion and empathy in the next generation. Our vision is an inclusive education system where all students feel accepted, supported and encouraged to be themselves and thrive. This will help create a world where future generations embrace, accept and support difference. We create safe spaces where young people can explore difference and consider their role in creating a wold where all feel accepted. Our student workshops feature positive LGBT+ or ally role models who speak openly about their lived experience, building young people’s empathy so they can understand the impact of their language and actions. In order to ensure sustained change we supplement this by training school staff, governors, parents and carers. To find more ways we can support you please visit our website www.diversityrolemodels.org or email info@diversityrolemodels.org

Video led dance whole unit resources teacher guide challenges routines activities inclusive

Video led dance, whole unit, resources, teacher guide, games, challenges, routines, activities, inclusive, PE, physical education, staff CPD, confidence building, seated and standing examples, curriculum support. This is a full scheme of work for KS1&2 dance - everything you need to run a successful unit of Dance in school PE lessons! Every part of the class is video led - there’s warm ups, routines, activities, games & challenges. It also comes with staff tips and ideas for teaching dance and there’s extension ideas for the class activities too (so they can do the video part then extend it if that’s suitable for your class). Students and staff resources are all included in the pack too. The lessons cover 5 key areas: Action, Balance, Space, Dynamics & Creativity. Each block has a folder with the videos (3 parts per block), teacher and student resources & music file for practice time. There’s also a powerpoint for additional teacher guidance including scheme of work overview, suggested learning outcomes, tips for teaching dance and loads more! The videos are split screen - half standing, half seated so that every child can be full involved in the lessons! So many times, I’ve seen children with disabilities be removed from PE, or children who have fallen over at break and are sitting at the side. This is a perfect way to encourage ALL your students to participate in a way that works for them. Other staff have said its been a great way for them to develop their confidence teaching dance and students loved the mix of activities and routines. This resource is perfect for supporting staff CPD. I have a promo video on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqC4kzI7yjo About me: I’m a PE and Dance teacher (primary & secondary) and ex professional dancer. I have taught Dance, as part of the PE curriculum, from ages 4-16. I also worked as a Primary Sports Liaison, where I supported staff CPD in local primary schools to build their confidence teaching PE. I also supported them in curriculum planning to ensure smooth transition from Primary to Secondary. I started dancing when I was 3 and trained in a variety of styles, I worked as Head Dancer for a leading holiday company and then performed in Europe’s number 1 MJ touring tribute show. I have put all my knowledge and skills into one package to make it super easy for teachers to delivery high quality Dance lessons in Primary schools. Working in Primary schools highlighted the need for differentiation in PE to enable children with disabilities to be involved. All the videos have a seated version and a standing version so that EVERY child can be fully involved in PE. Once purchased, the files will be emailed to you so you can save them to your school drive and reuse them as many times as you wish. If you have any questions please feel free to email me: flexfitwithbecky@hotmail.com

Herrings and Hops - a video resource for SEND settings

(0)
This video resource has been developed for working with young people with special educational needs and disabilities by EFDSS’ Inclusive Folk tutors, Emmie Ward, Nicholas Goode and Alice Barnard The videos and the accompanying booklet can be used in online tuition or as an inspiration for in-person classes and workshops. Both songs are traditional English folk songs that have been adapted by the Inclusive Folk team. The Herring’s Head is a cumulative folk song which can be changed and added to in different ways depending on your group of young people. It is especially suitable as a basis for a sensory session where the different verses can be supported with smell, touch, lights, sounds etc. As a sensory activity, this song will work well for young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD). You can view download the video from this page, and also download and save it onto your computer – or you can play it on YouTube. Hopping Down in Kent uses storytelling and acting to develop the song’s lyrics. It deals with the historical practice of Londoners leaving the city for a working holiday in the countryside. The narrators support the storyline with Makaton signs and, if you are streaming the video via YouTube, there is also the option to view the whole text subtitled. The booklet includes sheet music, lyrics and more information about the songs and suggestions for use. Important note: this resource contains hyperlinks to digitised versions of original manuscripts and other archival material in the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library’s online archive. Please be aware that these historical materials may contain content considered offensive by modern standards. Teachers are advised to check these links before sharing with students as materials may need contextualising. This resource is created as part of EFDSS’ Inclusive Folk Project, supported by John Lyon’s Charity. https://www.efdss.org/learning/resources/a-z/55-resources/learning-resources/10329-herrings-and-hops

Open education videos in the classroom

(0)
The use of open education resources has become more commonplace in classroom teaching and this has been an observable and growing trend. The accessibility of the same materials further reinforces the change in roles of the teacher, from gatekeeper of knowledge to learning facilitator. Our research question is that if a student has free and easy access to the same materials that are being used to teach them in class, how does this affect their perceptions when they are presented with this material in the classroom environment?
