This fun and original assembly is designed to teach children all about Black History Month, including:
-What Black History Month is;
-Why we have Black History Month;
-What life has been like for Black British people in the past and what it is like today;
-Providing examples of influential Black British people and what they have achieved;
-How Black History Month is celebrated.
The slides are visually-engaging and well-presented, and the subject matter is tailored to the interests and needs of young people. It includes links to well-chosen videos to emphasise/ reinforce key points, in addition to song suggestions.
There is enough here for a 30-35 minute assembly (it is 21 slides long), but of course you can cut bits out/ tailor to your own individual needs. No further resources are required, everything that you need to present the assembly is included. I would say that the assembly is ideally pitched at KS2, but both KS3 and KS1 would be able to access it with only minor vocabulary/ language adaptations.
The slides are fairly self-explanatory, but I’ve included guidance notes to assist the speaker. Hope that you find this useful!

Got offers from the University of St Andrew’s and Edinburgh University for History of Art with this personal statement in 2021/22. Techniques and approach can be used for any Arts and Humanities subjects.
This lesson contains:
A starter to consider what assumptions we can make about a fictional person based on the criteria on the board. This gets students into the thinking of using evidence to make guesses.
An image of the Tollund Man and gets students discussing what may have happened to him.
Background about the story of the Tollund Man, followed by a YouTube video on bog bodies and the Tollund Man himself to give the background.
A task for students to use the information booklet provided to note down the facts. This helps them seperate theory from fact. Once they have what they know as fact, they can then use the sources to add a bit of flavour to their notes. Students are then asked to consider their theory of what happened from an option of murder, religious sacrifice and execution.
The students use the facts and the source evidence to come up with a theory about what happened and defend it with historical reasoning. This is good fun and they also get to use historical skills and PEE etc.

L.O: I understand that ‘history’ means things that happened in the past.
I can talk about things which have happened in my personal history.
I can plot events onto a timeline in the correct order.
A lesson where students develop their understanding of the historical skill ‘significance’ by looking at several different historical figures such as William the Conqueror and Rosa Parks, from a range of time periods.
This was used as an interview lesson, so all resources are highly differentiated, include WAGOLLs and there are a range of AFL methods within the lesson.
This pack includes:
A 3 page baseline assessment designed to be given to students during their first half term in Year 7 to assess their historical skills and knowledge.
A PPT presentation with all the answers and mark schemes to use when going through the assessment with your students.
A self-assessment sheet for students to complete once they have their results for the teacher and student to set targets.
This resource has been successfuly used in the classroom for a number of years and has provided staff with vital data about each student’s historical knowledge and skills.
Please note that students need no prior historical knowledge of events to complete the assessment. The example sources and interpretations I use in the assessment are based on the Battle of Hastings as this is commonly taught in Year 7 but students do not need any knowledge of these events to gain full marks.

A good Year 7 lesson for the first week of term to encourage independent reading.
You will need at least one copy of Michael Morpurgo’s essay We Are What We Read in which he reflects on his childhood experiences of reading. This is published in Singing for Mrs Pettigrew: A Storymaker’s Journey, Walker Books, 2007.
Read the essay with/ to the class without telling them the name of the writer. Discuss the four questions (teacher’s notes provided) and then ask class to guess the name of the writer using the clue in question 4. They may be surprised to learn that Morpurgo did not like books when he was their age.
In pairs, pupils discuss questions about their own reading experiences, then produce a piece of writing to describe their own Personal Reading History.
A 3-page Word document
PowerPoint about the life and achievements of Charles Coward, a war hero from France. He made a clever and courageous plan to rescue Jews out of Auschwitz.
Various activities, tutorials and worksheets/questions related to aspects of the Year 12 Ancient History unit "Personality in their own times" for Hatshepsut.
