Understanding of Social skills is an under pinning tool required throughout life. Identifying our own feelings and the feelings of others helps us to adapt in our ever changing world. It helps children work independently or within a group and react to situations appropriately. The resource is designed for young people, aged 12+, who have social and communication related difficulties. It may benefit those with Autism or Neurodiversities but will also suit a range of learners who find social interaction, relationships, communication and independence more difficult for any reason. The workbook is packed full with 50 pages of activities that are designed to be used in the classroom or at home. This workbook can be used as a programme of work on social skills for learners who wish to develop these skills. It’s important for the teacher or adult working with the learner to check each activity for suitability for their individual student and that the programme is suitable for the individual. An explanation and exercise to try and practice. learning social skills is an important skill to have both as children and as adults. This Social Enquiry curriculum is based on a 35 week school year, dependent on available lessons per week, with room for extending time to complete work. Its design to support students with ASD and ADHD. The curriculum and lesson plans are designed to give a full outline for the lesson yet encourages social communication skills, leaving time to enable students to answer and contribute to the lessons. the aim is to enable students to gather the skills enabling them to contribute or call upon social abilities in public settings. A resource I made for a mixed group of ks1 / ks2 children with autism / social communication needs. Aim is to develop greater understanding of feelings and to begin to develop awareness of other's feelings, also turn taking and attention and listening. Resource includes a feelings poster and 18 cards describing situations that have happened to an imaginary child - e.g. 'She has a wobbly tooth'. We discuss the various feelings an how children are feeling today. Cards are placed face down and children take turns to turn cards over. They consider how the person may be feeling. More able groups could be prompted / questioned to consider would everyone feel that way in that situation (some people can't stand having wobbly teeth, others get excited...) further developing theory of mind and understanding that people can feel differently about situations.

Social story for children who are touching others inappropriately It covers what our private parts are and the fact that we must not touch other people’s. It also suggests some touches that are appropriate. The point of a social story is to use a patient and reassuring tone to teach children about social situations in a way that can be easily understood. Social stories can be useful for any child who is struggling to understand a situation or concept or needs help to understand a social skill or social cue, expectations, perspectives, common responses or is troubled about an upcoming event but social stories are particularly useful for children on the autistic spectrum for whom social cues can be challenging and who often suffer anxiety if they do not know what to expect from a situation. These books should be used over and over to reinforce the point so I would suggest either putting the pages into a display book or laminating and binding them. Life skills 19 lessons over various topics Can be covered quickly in 30 mins or up to 60 mins if interacting and allowing discussion Before I bought into a life skills resource for year 9 boys I made these 19 lessons. I have taught them myself and they can take from 30-60 minutes and in some cases they had computers or laptops and researched and made their own presentations One student in the group of 5 had an EHCP where some of these topics were asked to be taught - of course it had to be quite bespoke.
