A lesson plan, PowerPoint and differentiated worksheet which teaches the formal method for column addition and subtraction up to 4 digits. Initially used with a Year 4 class but could be adapted and used with Year 3. Pack includes: Adaptable Lesson PowerPoint - Calculations can be easily changed by changing the digits and adding (simply copy and paste) or deleting the place value counters. PowerPoint is designed so that teachers can model the methods and children can practise, before moving onto the activity. Differentiated Worksheet (HA, MA & LA questions) - ignore blank page. I couldn’t get rid of it. Answer sheet Place Value Grid - for pupils to use if they need visual representation (I laminated these so pupils had the choice of using actual place value counters or just drawing the counters with whiteboard pens then rubbing them out). Your students will love practising their maths facts with these addition and subtraction colour-by-number worksheets! Perfect for centres, morning work, or homework - just print and hand out. On these worksheets, students solve basic addition and subtraction problems in the picture, find the answer on the key, and then colour. All of the problems involve addition and subtraction within 20. Some colour-by-code resources put the problems on the key, but then students only have to solve a small handful of problems. By putting the problems in the picture, students spend much more time actually doing maths. This resource includes: 8 autumn colour-by-number worksheets full-colour answer keys

Number Bonds up to 10 Worksheets - Addition and Subtraction

** Welcome to Rainbow Education Fluency ** Addition and Subtraction number bonds up to 10 worksheet. Achieving fluency for mastery- pupils who regularly perform this activity against the clock not only increase their attainment level but also increase their ability to rapidly recall the number bonds to 10 facts, for addition and subtraction. This is a great tool for implementing Rosenshines principle of repetition with spaced, interleaved, retrieval practice. We model how to place the larger digit in their head and to count on. Initially they will need support and exposure to the facts in approx 30 minutes per session. Over the weeks you will start to see more questions answered at a greater speed, as well as, some retrieval from memory. the longer it is in place the more retrieval occurs. We have seen pupils who started with less than 10 in 20 minutes, end up with 100 in 4 minutes. For subtraction we teach the pupils how to efficiently re-use their addition bonds to calculate the difference. This reduces the need to learn so many facts. You could also try our times tables multiplication questions / division worksheet for those looking for mastery levels. Stages of reaching fluency 1) Using concrete objects as 1:1 representations - cubes, counters, fingers. 2) Counting on from the larger addend (commutative law of addition) using fingers. Pupils begin to recall facts that involve adding or subtracting 1 or 0 to/from a number within 10. 3) Short-term memory - answers retrieved from recent exposure, usually involves delayed responses. Pupils now begin to recall other facts, typically bonds to 10. 4) Long-term memory - answers are now retrieved over a longer period of time but often still have delays in locating the facts. Pupils begin to recall other facts from memory. 5) Automation - all answers are now retrieved instantly without any delays or calculations. Pupils now have an empty working-memory when performing reasoning tasks.

This resource contains a free set of three differentiated worksheets based on using addition and subtraction with word problems. I created this for a Year 3 class but it could easily be used for other age groups. This resource is to give you an idea of what the rest of my word problem resources are like which are for sale. Hope you enjoy it! This resource works well with my FREE presentation: Addition & Subtraction: Presentation on Partitioning, Number Lines & Column Method SAVE money by buying this as part of my Maths Bundle (over 30 worksheets!) Math Bundle: Addition & Subtraction General Math Worksheet Notes: Besides the learning objective, there is a colour in brackets. The colour refers to which worksheet would be most suitable for which differentiated group. The colours below represent the following ability. ★ Red - Lower Ability ★ Orange - Middle Ability ★ Green - High Ability I use the apple at the top right-hand side of the sheet for pupil self-evaluation. I get the students to colour the apple in the following colours: ★ Red - I don’t understand (please help me) ★ Orange - I am okay but need more practice ★ Green - I have met the objective and am ready for another challenge This helps me to identify which students will need help during the next lesson, ensuring I look through their work carefully to work out what misconceptions they may be having.
