Addition and Subtraction Word Problems

(1)
Adding and subtracting skills are practised in a range of contexts with these 48 multi-step (2 and some 3-step) word problem cards for your students to solve, plus a PowerPoint and double-sided worksheet. ALL ANSWERS INCLUDED. The cards are designed to be self-checking. The PowerPoint features the problems from the first 8 cards, while the worksheet features an additional 8 problems not on the cards. Includes some UK currency word problems. One of my most popular resources. DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND, DOLLAR VERSIONS NOW INCLUDED. Lots of different contexts for your pupils to practise addition and subtraction skills. This was originally designed for upper Key Stage 2 (KS2) - Year 5/6 (P6/P7) but would suit some other groups and classes too. The cards work well as a regular problem-solving challenge for early finishers or as part of your addition and subtraction focus. Includes adding and subtracting calculations involving decimals. The file containing the cards has the question sides on the odd numbered pages and the answer sides on the even numbered pages. If you want them printed back to back you can print the odd numbered pages, then pop the card or paper back in the printer in the correct order and print the even numbered pages on the other side. You can laminate them and have the pupils work on them individually or in groups, checking the answer on the back once they’ve had a go at it. Alternatively, make it competitive and have individuals or pairs race to get the answer, using a timer perhaps. A separate card featuring all answers is included in case you prefer not to print the answers on the back of the cards. A PowerPoint features the problems from the first 8 cards for a whole class activity or to introduce or revise word problems with pupils. The answers flash up on clicking the mouse. The worksheet could be used for jotter work or a homework task. Year 3 Addition and Subtraction

I teach the lower set of Year 3 mathematicians in our school and developed these resources to help them visualise how column addition and subtraction work. We start with expanded method in year 3 as we want the children to fully understand the value of each digit. The Place Value Grid is brilliant for helping children add and subtract using the column structure with Base 10. I then use the 2 diennes sheets to move them from concrete to pictorial (slightly Singapore maths linked). The other sheets are linked with STAR maths (See it, Try it, Apply it, Reason it) and I tend to use these along with try it questions on the whiteboard for the children to answer. Hope you find these as useful as I have.
