PRINTOUT DOCUMENT. This assessment document allows teachers the chance to see how well pupils understand and identify the techniques used in advertising. This paper asks pupils to think back to an advert they have seen (or have studied as a class) and how it meets certain criterias, what it was spreading awareness about / trying to sell, themes, mood, stereotypes and styles. It asks pupils to identify what the best and worst aspects of the advert and what they would do differently and how. Finally, it prompts and requires pupils to write a full advert review on what they have seen, using all that they have covered in the previous questions. This review must cover the introduction, plot, acting and conclusion.

This is an advanced (CEFR C1, IELTS 7.0) EFL Speaking class about advertising. Students begin the class by looking at a picture of a man demonstrating reluctance or hesitancy. The students will then read a short text about a businessman who is reluctant to spend money on advertising. The aim of this activity is to make students aware of the prevalence and importance of advertising. A short discussion about advertising follows. Next, students learn target language (product placement, native advertising, guerilla advertising, endorsement, before-and-after, jingle) using pictures (some guidance may be required in this activity). Students then match the method of advertising to its description. A further discussion about the various methods of advertising follows. Students then look at four situations and decide upon the best way to advertise for that particular situation. Two free production activities follow.

Here are six job adverts that I have used to practise job interviews in the classroom. I brainstorm the questions that interviewers and interviewees may ask at a job interview and divide the class into applicants and employers. The applicants cycle between the various employers and the interviewers must eventually choose the best person for the job. Although I use this as a speaking activity you could also use it to practise writing letters of application.
