Bubble Writing - Handwriting scaffold KS1

(6)
Bubble writing - cursive handwriting scaffold Like many primary school teachers I have tried a variety of handwriting schemes with varying degrees of success. Having thought through many common problems with handwriting I have developed a simple scaffold that places a bubble either side of the line to support letter formation. This simple scaffold provides a guide to consistently form cursive letters and ensure each letter is uniform in both height and width. Children are able to leave equal spaces between words and see clearly whether or not there is enough space at the end of each line for the next word they intend to write. There has been a huge impact within my class in a very short space of time and I hope you will see similar benefits within your own setting. Included is a PowerPoint presentation including words from the Year 1/2 spelling list that can be printed as a handwriting pack for children to work through. Blank slides enable you to add words to suit your needs and finally 2 different sized PDF scaffolds that children can use to write on (If photocopied the bubbles will disappear to leave the writing that has been completed.)

I have created this based upon the tortoise letters, giraffe letters and monkey letters idea. Each has it's own section. Hope it is of some use. My kiddies love it. xccw joined is the name of the font this has been created in as used in our school. Please be aware that you will not be able to view the cursive font unless it is installed on your computer.

KS2 Handwriting Intervention Programme

This is a step by step guide for an adult delivering a handwriting intervention to pupils in KS2. If you use a different font at your school then you can easily edit this on the word versions of each document, by highlighting the words and selecting your own school's font on your computer. This resource is aimed at pupils in KS2 who are not forming letters correctly and/or who are not joining letters correctly. This resource should be seen as a revision of existing knowledge and is not intended to be used at KS1. The resource has four pages: 1. Instructions 2. Progression through a set of individual words 3. Progression through writing whole sentences 4. A sheet for the adult to record the child's initial errors, dates and duration of sessions as well as the impact of the intervention.

Lines for Handwriting

I teach in Year 3 and find these lines are about right for aiding good handwriting. They have the three part structure and I coloured the middle part (for small letters) in yellow. I found that some lines were too wide for Y3 and so I adapted these lines to make them narrower. You can alter the size of the line simply by clicking on part of the image on the slide. I have included targets I use. Again, these can be edited. The font I used is Sassoon Primary so it may look different if you don’t have that font. I use these sheets for specific handwriting lessons although I did used them all the time in Year 1 but started with wider lines and gradually got narrower as the year progressed and their handwriting becoming more mature. They really help children to see the ‘three parts’ for tall letters, small letters and loops/descenders.

These will be used as a way to track progress in handwriting throughout the year, and also to assist with punctuation of speech/direct quotes. There are lines on the page to allow the teacher to model how to write the phrase using joined writing.

Practicing penmanship! Each of the 44 lessons in this unit are designed so students can learn useful information while practicing good cursive handwriting and improving near-point copying skills. The workbook pages have been sequentially arranged by difficulty – beginning with one-sentence copying activities and ending with 50-word paragraph copying. Each exercise boasts a different topic, from “famous quotes” and “inventions” to “manners” and “nutrition.” Research suggests that writing information in addition to reading the information improves the chances that the information will be understood and remembered. 52 pages.

Best Handwriting

An initiative used to ensure handwriting standards are kept high and consistent throughout the year. All students are asked to complete a piece of writing in their best handwriting (using the blank template). The PP explains what they need to do and has a space for a piece of writing you would like them to use - I used a blurb about our school. This piece of writing is then stuck into the front of all their exercise books as a standard they need to keep up throughout the year. An excellent resource for teachers and parents to discuss if the student is handing in work that is not of a high standard. Tutor to take ownership of ensuring this is stuck into all exercise books and again at any point during the year when exercise books are full.
