Amazing Code Breaking, Problem Solving Ofsted Maths Lesson!

(22)
I created this code breaking maths lesson for an Ofsted observation. The children thoroughly enjoyed it and had so much fun (whilst still learning). The children are told that they have been selected by the local police to solve a crime. Unfortunately, all of the money from the school office has been stolen and an artist impression of the suspects has been provided. The children must crack the secret police codes to elimate the innocent suspects (cross them off) and reveal the final two suspects. Once this has been completed the last clue is placed on the IWB. Children get a reward for helping the police! I have differentiated the 4 ways questions (HIPPO - the highest, MOUSE - the second highest, HA - third highest, LA - lowest) but they could be adapted to any year group! I have also included the lesson plan and PowerPoint to help clarify the task. Enjoy! 1st answer = MAN 2nd answer = HAT 3rd answer = BEARD 4th answer = GLASSES 5th answer = MOUSTACHE 6th answer = GINER 2 SUSPECTS LEFT = Kenny and Eric THIEF IS = KENNY *PLEASE NOTE I HAVE ADDED 2 ADDITIONAL DIFFERENTIATED SHEETS AND A POWERPOINT*

These topic-focused SATs questions at the end of a unit will help to test and extend students’ understanding as well as helping them to prepare for SATs next year. These questions have fully-worked solutions which can be displayed on a whiteboard making feedback with students more efficient. Click 👉 tes.com/…/KS2-Maths-Questions… for similar-style compilations on the other KS2 topics.<hr>This particular compilation is mainly from the ALGEBRA strand and contains questions which require students us problem solving techniques. In the solutions, I have often used algebraic notation to show how an answer has been obtained, but most of the solutions actually use logic rather than formal algebraic methods.<hr>I have designed this compilation to be printed as an A4 or A5 booklet which is in the style of the actual SATs papers and is convenient for use in class or as homework. It can even be given to individual students if a parent is asking for ‘some more work’! KEY POINTS: I have provided full answers, with comments and working where helpful. I have maintained the style of the actual SATs questions so that students can become comfortable with the way that SATs questions are presented. Most of the questions are from actual SATs papers, but I have also added questions so that this resource matches the requirements the current curriculum better than the older resources that are still in common use (note that many of the older resources of this type contain questions on topics which are no longer examined). I have spent a lot of time arranging the questions so that there is a general increase in difficulty as students work through them, and so that they fit on the pages better – this means less wasted space and significant paper-saving when printing 😃 <hr>👍If you like this resource, then please rate it and/or leave a comment💬. Summer Holiday Maths Problem Solving - KS2

This resource has seven multi-step problems to solve. Some of the problems have two examples, so you can work through the first example as a class to develop strategies and then the pupils can have a go independently. Alternatively, let them have a go first and then demonstrate more efficient strategies. There is also a quick starter activity based on measures as this was a focus for my class at the time and some of the questions involve converting measures. The questions are provided in SMART Notebook and PowerPoint format for display on the interactive whiteboard, and in PDF and Word format as a paper resource. These were originally used in Year 4 as an end of term activity and are based on the NNS Puzzles and Problems for Years 3 & 4; however, they could be used across KS2 with different levels of support. Ideas for use: Time filler for stolen moments at the end of term. Developing problem / investigation solving. Stick the question onto a large piece of paper and solve as a group. Adult-led guided group activity/assessment opportunity. Part of a Travel Agent role play corner. Early finishers work Homework activity School work for pupils going on a long holiday during term time (if you dare!) More able or Upper KS2 pupils could devise their own problems in the same format to truly demonstrate their understanding.

This stimulating and comprehensive enables students to count forwards and backwards through zero using negative numbers, and to solve number problems and practical problems involving negative numbers, including using negative numbers in context. The lesson follows a step-by-step learning journey, in which children learn through: Defining, exemplifying, and understanding the basic rules of calculations involving negative numbers, through clear and simple explanations; Demonstrating their understanding through well-differentiated application and challenge activities; Applying their understanding to real-life problems, for example temperatures, budgets and balances; Gauging their own understanding through both AfL activities and self-reflection tasks. Included is: Whole lesson PowerPoint - clear and precise, colourful and comprehensive; Bronze, Silver, and Gold level award worksheets - carefully differentiated and provided in both Word and PDF; Teacher answer sheets; A detailed teacher lesson plan; A number line; I have previously taught this to children in years 5 and 6, although with suitable adaptations it could be used for children between years 3-9. The budget can be changed to make it more challenging or easier. I did this as paired work in Y6 and my pupils loved it - I looked for the pair who could get closest to the budget.
