2 HOUR LESSON A fully-resourced transgender PSHE / RSE lesson which serves as an introduction to the difference between sex and gender and explores sexuality, identity, language (correct terms) and gender expression. Students will explore new key terminology before investigating the key components of identity and sexual orientation, why some people still find some of the ideas behind this controversial (such as pronoun use) and then educate other students on a trait they will be working on and presenting in small groups (all information needed is included). This lesson is great to consolidate the PSHE 2020/24 spiral curriculum (especially for an LGBT+ unit) or for a Citizenship diversity unit. The lesson has been written for KS5 and is editable, so easy to adapt for your own PSHE planning. A lesson all about what “Transgender” means in line with the new RSE Curriculum. Also contains talking points for students, discussions about gender, how to be an ally, and signposting to charities and organisations which can help support students and their families.

This lesson is designed for Transgender Awareness Week and looks at its purpose, issues surrounding transgender and the importance of advocacy and support. It includes optional discussion, video and articles to consider and the Teaching Notes include a link to duplicate an introductory quiz on Microsoft Forms to gauge understanding prior to the session. The plenary slide allows for a summing up and to gain understanding of what students have gleaned.

LO: To know different Christian views on homosexuality and transgender issues Lesson starts by discussing a controversial petition about a film ‘depicting Jesus as a lesbian woman’, then watching an extract of the Diarmaid MacCulloch documentary Sex and the Church (linked on the slide), with questions to complete (answers included). Students look at some recent news from the Pope endorsing same sex civil unions, the background context to the decriminalisation of homosexuality in the UK (extension to explore an article about conversion therapy), and then are to complete a double sided sheet about homosexuality and transgender issues using the textbook to help. Students then complete and peer mark a 10 mark question, and complete a 15 mark question for homework. This is a revision session on Celibacy, Marriage, and Transgender from the AQA A Level Religious Studies syllabus. It be used as either a standard lesson or extra-curricular revision session. The lesson covers the content that students need to know for the exams and then has activities designed to consolidate learning. Exercises include Tweet the Definition (where students examine key terms); Newsround (a mind map activity); The Weakest Link (a quiz); Thought for the Day (a blogpost writing activity); and the Big Questions (a debating exercise). There is also a homework assignment which you can use to assess learners’ progress.
