Help students use different kinds of evidence to explain how the climate is changing.
This opening module distinguishes weather, climate and climate change before comparing the instrument record with evidence from ice cores, sea ice, glaciers, historic writings and paintings. Students consider how far each record reaches and why agreement between independent sources strengthens a conclusion.
Learning covered
- Distinguish weather, climate and global warming.
- Describe glacial and interglacial patterns.
- Interpret temperature, carbon dioxide and sea-ice graphs.
- Explain how ice cores preserve evidence of past conditions.
- Compare the strengths and limitations of different evidence.
Teaching options and materials
Choose between the tiered Full Lesson presentation and the focused Essentials presentation. Matching materials include the Full Lesson workbook in colour, black and white and a version for typed responses, plus completed and student-notes Essentials Booklets with black-and-white alternatives. Exam practice, a mark scheme, a short assessment and a START HERE guide are included.
The Case File
Teams divide responsibility between instruments, ice, cores and archives. Each student prepares an evidence card with a figure and an honest limitation, then the group combines the cards into a case file. Sceptic slips require students to draw on another team member’s evidence. The task makes agreement between sources something students demonstrate themselves. The collaborative lesson has its own presentation and printable pack.
