IB DP Physics skill pack: concluding and evaluating an investigation, SL and HL, first assessment 2025. Half the internal assessment: Criteria 3 and 4, 12 of the IA’s 24 marks, and the tail nearly every Paper 1B data question ends on. 34 answered items, 44 student pages.
What this pack is, and what it is not
The IB asks these skills to be practised inside the topics and investigations that need them, so this is a supplement to integrated teaching, not a taught unit of the course. It is reference and remedial material for the written half of an investigation.
This pack is worked, not taught: the 405 minutes shown is student working time across the practice bank, not classroom delivery time. It runs as seven sittings of about an hour, and the teacher key says where each break falls.
What students learn:
- A conclusion that answers the research question that was asked, in one sentence
- The justification behind it: the value, the trend and the range tested
- The overlap test: does the accepted value fall inside the range the result covers
- A published value, cited, and the difference held against the experiment’s own uncertainty
- A weakness specific enough to matter, and the improvement that answers it
Seven rule cards with a worked example each, then two worked examples on one student’s report, conclusion and evaluation. Three tiers: eight drill tables, 87 answered cells; ten applied items, 41 lettered parts; four multiple-choice and three exam-style questions, 37 marks.
IB skills (Inquiry 3: Concluding and evaluating, with Inquiry 2). Taught: relating outcomes to the research question or hypothesis; drawing and justifying conclusions from processed data; comparing them with the accepted scientific context; the impact of uncertainties on conclusions; evaluating weaknesses, limitations and assumptions; evaluating hypotheses; explaining realistic improvements. Practised: random and systematic errors; interpreting qualitative and quantitative data; accuracy, precision, reliability and validity.
What’s included:
- Student Worksheet, 44 pages, colour and B&W
- Teacher Key, 65 pages, every item answered with marking guidance
- The editable worksheet, a self-contained HTML file
Worksheet and key are two projections of one source, so no answer file can drift. Opens in any browser, nothing to install, worksheet editable. It declares no topic and no understanding: this belongs to the IB skills in the study of physics. Grades 11-12 (ages 16-19).
