This print-and-use unit of work includes worksheets & activities that are part of my teaching unit for William Shakespeare’s iconic comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Specifically, the worksheets focus on Act 3, Scene 1 of the play, in which the Mechanicals rehearse their play and Bottom is transformed. The unit includes:

1. Comprehension Questions for Act 3, Scene 1 of the play.

2. Shakespeare in Context: Information Text about Shakespearean acting traditions, including the tiring house and the ‘play within the play’ being rehearsed by the Mechanicals.

3. Shakespeare’s Language: Puns and Malapropisms in Act 3 - This language analysis activity introduces puns and malapropisms and facilitates close reading and a creative engagement with the text by the students.

4. Teacher’s Guide & ANSWER KEY with detailed MODEL ANSWERS for the comprehension questions. TEACHER’S GUIDE with annotations & detailed commentary of the most important lines of the scene. This is designed to help teachers (especially those new to the play), but will also be useful to the more experienced Shakespeare enthusiasts.

Perfect for independent study or in a distance learning setting.

A Midsummer Night's Dream - Advanced Teaching + Drama + Literary Analysis BUNDLE

This bundle contains ALL my print-and-use worksheets, handouts, presentations and teaching activities for my extensive unit on Shakespeare’s *A Midsummer Night's Dream*. The level of the bundle is certainly high enough to be taught as a set text for the IB English A: Literature or English A: Language and Literature curriculum OR as a year 8-10 text (also suited to IGCSE / GCSE Exam Prep, depending on the current curriculum!) Most resources, in my opinion, are too patronising of the students. Additionally, this BUNDLE puts particular emphasis on teaching the play through guided drama and acting activities in class. Keeping all this in mind, the bundle contains worksheets / handouts for EVERY SCENE of the play. Each worksheet includes a variety of the following: 1. Comprehension & Close Reading Questions (for all scenes). 2. Drama Activities / Role-play or Re-enactment Activities to help students engage with the text in a multi-sensory manner and to try to make the text on the page come to life. This is a crucial way to get especially younger students to enjoy Shakespeare and to not be overwhelmed with his complex use of Early Modern English (*A Midsummer Night's Dream*, after all, is often taught as a first Shakespeare play (in the original). 3. Shakespeare in Context: Various information texts to give students a better insight into the context of composition, Shakespeare’s England, and the critical reception of the play. 4. Analysing Character, Language, Structure, Plot, Themes and Stylistic Devices Activities (these differ and are adapted to what each scene is most suited to). These practice activities offer lots of guidance for students to practice their close reading and language analysis skills, and to facilitate guided writing about drama. 5. MODEL ANSWERS + TEACHER’S NOTES section for ALL WORKSHEETS, include detailed answers to all questions and activities and are designed to help teachers gain a deeper understanding of the play, guide their assessment of the students essays / extract analysis questions, and generally to help when teaching this iconic but albeit complex Shakespearean tragedy. 6. Included in this bundle is my Shakespeare Biography worksheet AND my Introduction to Shakespeare’s Language worksheet (+ MODEL ANSWERS etc.). Lastly, I am in the middle of teaching this unit myself, right now, and so it is very likely that I will make changes and update this resource (free of charge, of course!) This is very much a work in progress, in other words. So if you have feedback / requests for this resource, please let me know by email rather than leaving a bad review.
