This Beginning Sounds and Symbols resource has been designed to support SEND teachers, teaching assistants and children working on early phonics, speaking and listening, vocabulary and letter recognition.
The resource includes 4 full-colour activity pages, with each page also duplicated in black and white for use as individual worksheets.
Every page displays the alphabet around the outside, with a selection of clear symbols in the centre, (Boardmaker Licenced). Children can name each symbol, listen carefully to its beginning sound and then find or point to the matching initial letter.
The colour pages are ideal for laminating and reusing, making them useful for quick-fire speaking and listening activities, small-group work, interventions, phonics sessions or one-to-one support. Children can point, name, match and repeat sounds without needing to write, making the activities accessible to a range of learners.
The black-and-white worksheets offer additional opportunities for children to colour the pictures, trace or identify letters, and practise making links between objects and their initial sounds.
Also included is a blank template that teachers and children can use to create their own personalised beginning-sound sheets. This can be adapted around classroom topics, children’s interests, familiar objects or specific sounds that need further practice.
A simple, flexible resource that can be used again and again to develop phonological awareness, vocabulary, listening skills, letter recognition and confidence with early sounds.
