This engaging and structured lesson series supports students in developing a deep understanding of a powerful text exploring dyslexia, identity, and the education system. Across the unit, students build confidence in reading comprehension, language analysis, and structural analysis, with a clear focus on GCSE-style Question 4 skills.

Students begin by exploring the core message of the text, recognising key ideas such as the misunderstanding of dyslexia, the limitations of the education system, and the strengths associated with different ways of thinking. They then move on to analysing a wide range of language techniques, including the rule of three, direct speech, rhetorical questions, and inclusive pronouns, developing the skills needed to explain writer’s methods and their effects on the reader.

The unit also provides explicit teaching of structure, guiding students to identify shifts, contrasts, and the overall progression from struggle to empowerment. High-level interpretation is embedded throughout, encouraging students to consider the writer’s purpose and the broader message of the text.

A model Grade 9 response and scaffolded writing frames are included to support all learners in progressing from basic responses to more detailed and analytical answers. This resource is particularly suitable for KS3 and KS4 students, including those who benefit from clear structure, step-by-step guidance, and accessible, inclusive content.

What’s included:

  • Clear breakdown of the text’s core ideas and messages
  • Quote-to-theme matching activities
  • In-depth language analysis (rule of three, direct speech, rhetorical questions, humour, inclusive pronouns, imperatives, anecdotes)
  • Step-by-step guidance for GCSE-style Question 4 responses
  • Structure analysis (shifts, contrast, cyclical structure, turning points)
  • High-level interpretation and critical thinking tasks
  • Scaffolded writing frames for exam responses
  • Full Grade 9 model answer
  • Progression guidance from pass to top-band responses
  • Engaging activities to support independent and reflective learning

Ideal for whole-class teaching, intervention, or revision, this unit promotes both academic skills and a positive, strengths-based understanding of dyslexia.
