Target audience matters. When pupils can identify a target audience and design for it, they create digital products that are clearer, more persuasive and more effective.
Creating for Audiences is a classroom-ready 6 lesson KS3 Computing unit for Year 7 that shows pupils how target audience and purpose shape every design decision in a leaflet. It also works well with other year groups if you want a flexible, confidence-building unit early in KS3.
Pupils start as audience detectives, comparing leaflets and using a simple think, feel, do approach to explain how design choices influence the reader. They work from a client brief to choose essential information and plan a clear, easy-to-scan layout.
They learn Canva essentials with the focus on communication, not clicking buttons, then build a professional leaflet using alignment, spacing, frames and whitespace. Pupils write short, audience-appropriate text with a clear call to action, peer review using a structured sheet and improve their work.
Next, pupils adapt their leaflet for a new target audience, revising wording, images and layout while keeping branding consistent. They then create a third leaflet for an audience of their choosing. The unit ends with exporting as images, understanding zipped files and a short evidence write-up explaining how each leaflet meets its audience’s needs.
Everything is fully planned and ready to teach, including editable PowerPoints, lesson plans and worksheets plus an images folder and high-quality leaflets for analysis.
