Transport CVC Words: Sounding-Out Cards for Cars, Trains, Rockets and More
Some children need a lot of early blending practice, and it can be hard to keep them trying. These bright transport cards give them a reason to keep going. Children who love vehicles will be drawn in by the pictures of cars, rockets, trains, trucks, helicopters and ships, and will want to sound out the words on each card.
Each card is a box of CVC words from one word family, such as ap/at/ot/ut. The child picks a card and decodes every word on it.
Getting ready
Print every page except the first.
Cut each page in half.
Laminate the half-pages.
Ways to play
Partner reading. Give each pair four cards. One child picks a card and reads the words aloud to their partner. Then the partner does the same.
Beat the clock. One child sees how many cards they can read in a set time, for example three minutes.
Group collecting game. Scatter the cards on the table. Each child takes a card, reads the words and puts it to their right, then takes another, until none are left. The child with the most cards wins.
You can, of course, invent your own games with them.
