AQA A Level 1C The Tudors: England 1485-1603
The aim of this lesson is to question whether Edward was fit to rule from the start.
Students examine the problems faced by earlier child kings of England before analysing extracts from Edward VI’s Chronicle, which reveal a ruler who could appear cold, serious, and highly aware of royal authority. Excellent video links help bring Edward’s childhood and upbringing to life, while prediction activities challenge students to consider what kind of king Edward might have become had he lived longer.
The lesson also includes guided reading activities focused on Edward’s attitude towards kingship, his character, and the key figures who influenced him. A fun and engaging “Real or Rubbish?” plenary helps students test their understanding while challenging common myths about Edward VI.
An enquiry question runs throughout the lesson and is revisited regularly to help students track progress and build historical judgement across the unit.
