Problem solving with fractions. Visualisation. Variation. Bar modelling. SATS revision

Year 6 ‘Expected Level’ question taken from Testbase:
‘4/5 of the runners in a race have finished the race so far. 92 people have finished. How many runners were in the race altogether?’

The lesson leads children through how to model questions using the known facts and the calculations they need to use to find the unknown values and the answer. There are examples to show the class, practise questions the class can all do together which leads into a differentiated independent task and then a challenge.
The lesson uses Bar Modelling and Variation (both from Shanghai / Singapore Maths as a part of Maths Mastery) to build children’s skills so they have the tools they need to answer these types of questions independently.

I have found this style of lesson really useful in the past as it hones in on one question style giving the children the chance to master their skills so they have a greater depth of knowledge. Once children have mastered this and built confidence they can they apply it to other areas of problem solving.

I have uploaded the lessons and sheets as powerpoints which are easy to adapt if you would like to. There is one powerpoint with the lesson on. The other powerpoint is printables of the bar models for the practise section, the independent activity both as worded questions and as worded questions with bar models to be annotated. The challenge activity can be printed so children can stick in their book and answer.

I hope this lesson is useful, helps your children learn and saves you some time. This is one of the first lesson I have uploaded so any feedback would be helpful to me moving forwards. I want my resource to help you and make you life easier!
