Firstly I told the students the ‘Little Star House with no doors, no windows but a star inside’. There are plenty of versions of this story on the internet if you have a browse. Then I cut an apple straight through the centre and gave one half to each pair of students. We discussed the parts that the students were familiar with - core, stalk, seeds and skin. Student’s used their apple half to draw their own labelled diagram. The second component of the lesson was conducting our own investigation on how to stop an apple from turning brown. Firstly the students made their own prediction. Then they observed what happens when milk, lemon or water were placed on a slice of apple and recorded their findings on the worksheet.
