This engaging, high-quality planning (593 words), 18-slide PowerPoint and 5 resources includes everything you need to teach children about the absorbency of everyday materials. Children will then complete a test/investigation into how absorbent common materials are. This planning is lots of fun and has been designed to develop vocabulary and scientific skills.

The lesson design is as follows, children look at the vocabulary of ‘absorbency’ with some examples. They then discuss the properties of absorbent materials, and then they complete the test.

The resources include clear set up instructions, a sheet for recording the test on, an adapted sheet for children with SEN, a scaffold for drawing, and a challenge sheet. The planning is clearly laid out and every file is easily labeled by lesson to make everything quick and easy for you.

The experiment requires minimal set up and all of the physical resources are likely to be found within a school.

Please note: this lesson is taken from my 6 lessons on materials for Year 1 students, however this specific lesson meets some of the objectives in both the Year 1 and Year 2 National Curriculum, as highlighted on the planning.
