Atlas Mapping Task – British Isles Mapping Task – Base map and task sheet - KS3 Geography – Exploring Places

Includes both a PDF version and editable Word Document version.

An activity designed to allow pupils the opportunity to build upon their World knowledge as well as consolidate their Atlas skills.

This resource directs pupils to use an Atlas (book or online) to map as many of the key locations such as country names, capital cities, mountains and rivers onto the base map of the British Isles which has been provided. Pupils are provided with a ‘checklist’ of what to map and are encouraged to design their own key to when presenting this information. Pupils are also provided with extension tasks throughout in addition to a guide of how to make their map wonderful.

I have found this resource useful with KS3 Geography pupils as an introductory task when teaching about the UK, to help pupils identify the different areas that make up Great Britain, the United Kingdom, and the British Isles. I have used this within the classroom environment to ensure pupils had access an Atlas whilst completing this activity. However, this resource would also be well-suited for an independent home learning.

Adaptable versions are included in this download enabling you to alter to suit your school’s geography curriculum or to cater to the needs of your teaching groups.
