Three and More Step Equations is a fully resourced secondary maths teaching pack. This is Part 5 of a 5-part unit designed with atomisation, explicit instruction, cognitive load shaping, variation theory, and schema-aware progression. Lesson 5 of our Linear Equations 1 Bundle.
Culminating the structural foundations established across the unit, this lesson tackles multi-step linear equations and complex fractional forms. By embedding a robust “peeling back layers” schema, students learn to systematically isolate variables using inverse operations. The lesson places particular emphasis on treating the vinculum as an explicit grouping operator, training students to evaluate structural dominance and navigate negative arithmetic safely without falling back on fragile shortcuts.
What Is Included in This Pack?
- 1. Lesson Slides.pptx: Presentation featuring diagnostic mini-whiteboard questions, silent teacher modeling blocks, and an intelligent variation expansion sequence. Visualiser ready.
- 2. Worksheet.docx: Atomised 25-question progression sheet building procedural fluency through multi-step variations, negative coefficients, and boundary cases involving zero results. Includes a Live Marking Key.
- 3. Exam Style Questions.docx: Targeted assessment paper containing 15 formal exam questions to verify long-term retention under timed conditions. Complete with a mark scheme mapping method (M1), accuracy (A1), and independent (B1) marks.
- 4. Lesson Guide_5.docx: Pedagogical handbook detailing delivery strategies, 60/75-minute lesson timings, anticipated misconceptions, and metacognitive teacher scripts.
Linear Equations (Full Unit 1 Outline)
All lessons use the same structured, mastery-oriented pedagogy and include a detailed Lesson Guide.
- Lesson 1: Mechanics of order of operations and the dominant term priority method.
- Lesson 2: One-step equations, utilizing the vinculum definition.
- Lesson 3: Two-step equations with a fractional focus, isolating the vinculum structure as a priority.
- Lesson 4: Mixed two-step formats, navigating fractional and standard structures.
- Lesson 5: Multi-step consolidation up to 5 steps, choosing inverse sequences to systematically peel back nested layers.
Units 2 and 3 build on this unit to complete the Linear Equations block.
All lessons include as standard:
- Atomisation and check-teach-recheck sequences (via Non-example/Positive-example strategies) for prerequisite skills, such as identifying expressions where the dominant operation is separate from a fraction expression.
- Method modelling with metacognitive scripting prompts to maximize clarity, explicitly showing students how to maintain balance and write equivalent equations line-by-line under a visualiser.
- Expansion sequence mini-whiteboard sets utilizing intelligent variation to guide students from 3-step structures through to 4-step equations and nested fractions.
