This lesson is designed for the NEW AQA GCSE Trilogy Chemistry GCSE, particularly the ‘Using our Resources’ scheme of work.
The lesson begins by a ‘Think > Pair > Share’ task getting students to consider the properties of different types of metals, and how they may be effected by the environment over time.
The next activity includes a video link whereby children will watch the video, which describes the effect of corrosion on metals, and they will need to answer a set of questions at the same time. The answers to this activity are included so students can mark their answers.
The next part of the lesson is an investigation into the conditions which cause iron to rust, children will need to set up an investigation as detailed in the PowerPoint and leave this for a week before look at their results.
The last activity considers the ways in which you can prevent rusting, children will walk around the room and share information with each other to complete a table on the different methods used to prevent rusting. This task can be self-assessed using the answers provided on the PowerPoint presentation.
