New Year Initial Sounds Resource SEND

This New Year Initial Sounds Resource is designed especially for SEN and KS1 learners, using licensed Boardmaker® symbols to provide clear, consistent visual support.
The activity is based around the letters found in the words NEW YEAR, helping children think about New Year themes such as explore, change, growth, adventure, and reflections.
For each letter, children are presented with three carefully chosen picture symbols (for example, W – wish, welcome, wonder and A – acorn, awake, adventure) that link meaningfully to the New Year context.
The symbols are presented six per page, making them easy to print, cut out, and handle.
Children can discuss each word, say the initial sound, and sort the symbols by letter, supporting phonics, speaking and listening, vocabulary development, and early categorisation skills. There is a letter card included for each sound.
This flexible resource works well in small groups, interventions, continuous provision, or 1:1 SEN support, and is ideal for reinforcing initial sounds in a meaningful, seasonal way.
