1. To explain why chemists aim to design production methods with fewer steps that have a high percentage atom economy, that do not require a solvent and involve the use non-hazardous starting materials

2. To identify functional groups in organic compounds

3. To apply reactions learnt from the AQA A level specification to devise synthetic routes, with up to four steps, for an organic compound
